Giovanni Allegrini used to describe his vineyard in a way that no Oenologist would ever use: "The morning sun, dispelling the shadows of the night, awakens nature and gently caresses the grapes." He was proud of this slope – “The wild mountain” – because its eastern exposure ensures that the first light of day hits the grapes before the heat arrives. A consistent ripening, subtle and patient, like everything that aims to be truly good. Fieramonte is the estate’s highest and most demanding vineyard. Corvina Veronese provides the structure and red fruit. Corvinone the body. Rondinella the freshness. And Oseleta – one of the rarest, oldest Veronese grape varieties – almost forgotten, preserved by Allegrini – adds a dark, tannic complexity that no other wine from the appellation possesses to the same degree.
The grapes are harvested by hand in the second week of September and carefully selected. Then comes the Fruttaio: five months of drying, until 40 to 50 per cent of the weight has evaporated. What remains is a concentration of a magnitude that is almost beyond imagination – an extract of 40.8 grams per Liters in the 2018 vintage, an alcohol content of 16.5%, balanced by an acidity of 7.30 grams, which preserves the wine’s astonishing freshness. In the cellar: 48 months in small French oak barriques. Then six months in large Slavonian oak barrels. Then over two years of bottle ageing. Only then does the Fieramonte leave the estate – as a wine that has waited more than seven years for its first moment in the glass.
2018 was a year of exceptional concentration and depth in the Valpolicella Classica region: warm summer months, well-distributed rainfall in the spring, healthy grapes, and late ripening on the high-altitude Fieramonte slope. Deep, almost black garnet red with ruby highlights. The bouquet reveals concentrated dark cherry and plum, chocolate, tobacco, leather, dried violets, spices, and a long hint of balsam that unfolds in layers. On the palate, it is both immense and elegant – the tannins dense and ripe, the acidity precise and supportive, the final long, warm and with a persistence that knows no haste. Fieramonte – every year, the impossible is achieved from this vineyard. SUPERIORE.DE
"An intense, dark ruby colour with a delicate garnet rim. Dense and captivating on the nose, opening with notes of cold coffee, cinnamon and cardamom, followed by abundant yellow-fleshed plums, blackberries and wild raspberries. Powerful on the attack and through the palate, it coats the palate with rich dark fruit notes, plenty of blackberry, along with a touch of dark chocolate, and grippy tannins in many layers." Falstaff
“A lush and silky red wine that unfolds seamlessly and smoothly, combining aromas of warm cherries and figs, cocoa powder, dried thyme and sage. It offers a hint of loamy earth, paired with a lively burst of blood orange peel and pomegranate seeds, as well as a firm structure of fine-grained tannins. Its balance and effortless integration initially mask the depth and concentration on offer, so take your time and savour it slowly.” Wine Spectator
“Although the cooler, more nuanced 2016 vintage is hard to beat, this wine manages to do so with admirable composure, despite the heat typical of 2018. Mulled wine-ripened cherries, aniseed, camphor, mossy undergrowth, shiitake mushrooms and dashi. The mid-palate is hearty, rich and full of umami. Aromatic and structured, with oak and mineral notes providing tension. The finish is very long and fresh. This is excellent.” James Suckling
“The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Fieramonte unfolds a seductive bouquet of crushed black cherries, violet sweets, cloves and a hint of cocoa powder. It is pure elegance, a blend of polished red berry fruits with crisp mineral notes, cloves and cinnamon sticks, all balanced by an enticing acidity. The 2018 vintage showcases the best qualities of the year: feminine and pure, yet powerful, whilst finishing with astonishing length and sweet tannins. This magnificent Amarone fills me with humility.” Vinous
“On the nose, aromas of coffee, liquorice and cough sweets, along with sticky liquorice, raisins and dried strawberries. A wonderful texture – wow, this is simply a delight to drink. Whilst it is a touch more reserved than the excellent 2015 and 2016 vintages, the hallmarks are all there – grippy, salty tannins, a lovely sweetness on the mid-palate, plenty of dried fruit flavours and high acidity that provides vigour and length. Overall, so supple and full of energy, yet also deep, dense and complex. This wine wants to please – and it certainly does. Extremely satisfying and a magnificent glass of wine. Simply fantastic. Intense, yet absolutely irresistible.” Decanter
“It’s as if you’re stepping into an Italian leather shop that shares its premises with an artisan coffee roastery and a chocolate workshop. Notes of black cherries and sweet spices run through every layer. On the palate, it has a powerful presence, yet retains its grace – —a hint that this wine has stories to tell, but isn’t quite ready to share them yet. Give it a decade, then settle in for a proper chat.” Wine Enthusiast
