Le Macioche takes its name from the root of the strawberry tree, the corbezzolo – known as "la macioca" in the local dialect. It is precisely this shrub that forms the woods surrounding the small, approximately six-hectare estate, three of which are classified as Brunello vineyards. For several years now, a new, simple logo has symbolised this deep-rooted connection: a macioca root burrowing into the ground – a symbol of the vine's strength and its connection to the land, conceived in a modern spirit yet firmly anchored in the tradition of Montalcino. The vines are situated at an altitude of 420 metres, facing south-southeast, on soil rich in galestra. They are trained using the Guyot system, with yields deliberately kept low through summer thinning, and fermentation carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts. The alcoholic fermentation of the Brunello takes place in traditional wooden vats – a process that lends depth to the Sangiovese Grosso without over-aggressively manipulating it.
A concentrated, luminous ruby red. On the nose, dried wild plums and dried cherries, earthy nuances, undergrowth of fresh juniper, dried flowers and white musk. On the palate, it reveals its ageing potential through elegant, silky and flavourful tannins – clean, deep and spicy-mineral, with a very long final. Unmistakable and unrivalled in character and sincerity. SUPERIORE.DE
"A rich, brilliant ruby red with violet highlights. On the nose, complex fruit notes – redcurrant, wild strawberry and cherry – as well as thyme. On the palate, it is exceptionally harmonious and well-structured, with a precise balance of acidity and tannins, and a lingering finish." Falstaff
"Modern and aromatic, with notes of walnut shells, sweet spices and mussel shells, which blend with dark cherry fruit. Ripe and beautifully full-bodied, with a medium to full body and a firm, compact finish. Well-structured and aromatic. Give it a little time to allow the oaky tannins to develop." James Suckling
"The Le Macioche 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Cotarella is a rich and concentrated wine characterised by spicy nuances on the nose, with notes of toasted spices, tobacco and spiced chocolate setting it apart. Despite its rich plum flavours, these oak-influenced notes lend the wine a distinctive character that is unique to this vintage. It displays a medium-bodied texture with high-quality tannins and well-balanced acidity, which provides freshness without veering into sourness, reflecting the winery's focus on structure and balance." Wine Advocate
"Deep and brooding, this red delivers a core of ripe plum, blackberry, iron and underbrush flavors. Lively, with an underlying mineral element and dense yet energetic tannins, leaving tension on the finish for now. All of the components are there, so give this two to three years to integrate."
