This is a wine whose label speaks a language all of its own. Filo di Seta is adorned with an oil painting by Sandro Chia from the early 1980s – now in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. It depicts an androgynous figure leaping backwards into the Grotta Azzurra on Capri: weightless, suspended in that moment between sky and water. Beneath it is Chia's verse: "In strange, dark water – when a white dot glows, when a doll leaps – I fly by her side." The wine, the winemaker tells us, is meant to be precisely that: a sensation that defies the obvious.

The name comes from a stream. "Filo di Seta" – "silk thread" – is the name of the trickle that flows through the unspoilt woods surrounding the castle and past the single vineyard from which this wine is made. 2.5 hectares, at 270 metres, blue-grey galestro shale, which imparts both structure and minerality. Planted in 1995 with old Sangiovese clones, which naturally produce small, concentrated grapes. Fermentation in concrete tanks, spontaneous malolactic fermentation, aged for at least 24 months in oak, followed by bottle ageing. Only 6,500 bottles.

A dark, alluring bouquet: exotic spices, lavender, mint, dried black cherries – cool, precise, with a tension that does not dissipate but builds in layers. On the palate, it is firm yet silky, with crisp minerality, ripe wild berries and violets in the background, and a finish of extraordinary length and harmony.
