Elisabetta Geppetti has dedicated this Rosato to a woman who came before her: Rosa Mati – the first in the family to believe in the Maremma when others were still turning a blind eye. A woman who invested when this wild coastal landscape in south-western Tuscany was not yet a wine-growing region in the modern sense. That belief was the beginning of everything that Le Pupille is today. And the wine that bears her name is Elisabetta Geppetti's most personal creation – unchanged in its conviction since the first vintage in 2002: 100% Syrah, as a rosé. This is not an obvious choice. In the Maremma, Syrah is primarily known as a powerful red wine. Turning it into a rosé – transparent, fresh, elegant – requires precision.

The La Carla vineyard is situated near Magliano at an altitude of 150 metres, on clay-loam soils; it covers just 2.5 hectares and was planted in 2000. Hand-harvested in September, followed by gentle maceration on the skins for several hours, then pressing and fermentation in stainless steel at 15 degrees. Twenty% is aged briefly in second-use tonneaux. Six months in stainless steel. Around 12,000 bottles. Since the 2023 vintage, the wine has borne the new Maremma Toscana DOC label – a further tribute to the region that Rosa Mati was the first to recognise.

A bright coral pink. The bouquet displays an elegance one rarely expects from a rosé: wild rose, carnation, strawberry, a hint of grapefruit and white pepper, accompanied by a subtle mineral freshness in the background. On the palate, it has a medium to full body – unusually meaty for a rosé, with a creamy texture, lively acidity and a slight tannic grip that betrays its Syrah origins.
