Black as night – that is how Andrea Franchetti himself described this wine when it was vinified separately for the first time in 2014. Campo di Camagi represents the extreme opposite in Trinoro's Cabernet Franc trilogy: whilst Magnacosta soars and Tenaglia stretches, Camagi is dense. One and a half hectares at an altitude of 550 metres, a flat, stony soil of crushed quartz and limestone – hardly any humus, hardly any depth. The vines, over 27 years old, fight for every centimetre; their roots penetrate the hard layer, filling the limited space completely. This struggle for space, this competition in the soil, manifests itself in the wine: concentration, density, weight. Twelve months in stainless steel tanks, eight months in barriques, a further twelve months in concrete – a vinification process that gives the wine time to organise its power without taming it.

Camagi is a wine that does not give in. The nose reveals black fruit in its purest form: cassis, dark plums, a hint of violets, accompanied by earthy notes of graphite, tobacco and toasted wood. The 2023 vintage offers richness and power without veering into overripeness – the high altitude and the cool September weather ensured a balance between ripeness and freshness. Yet, compared to the other two crus, Camagi remains the darkest, the most reserved. On the palate, the full grandeur of this vineyard unfolds: massive, velvety, yet present. The tannins are like a heavy velvet curtain – soft in texture, yet with an unyielding structure. Where Magnacosta remains light and dancing and Tenaglia grips the palate firmly, Camagi completely envelops the palate, layering itself over the senses. Campo di Camagi is a wine for the patient. Not accessible, not ingratiating – yet possessing a depth and complexity that, after years of bottle ageing, can achieve an almost mystical expressiveness.
