When a winery uses the same label for its Riserva for over sixty years, it is not a lack of imagination – it is a philosophy. Castello di Monsanto's Riserva is considered one of Italy's oldest labels still in continuous production. The label was around even before Chianti Classico became an appellation. It has survived decades and changing fashions – and it encapsulates what Monsanto stands for: Sangiovese as a conviction. The estate is situated in San Donato in Poggio, the westernmost sub-region of Chianti Classico, at an altitude of 280 to 320 metres. Galestro – a slate-rich soil, sparse and highly mineral – is the soil in which the Sangiovese vines from four vineyards take root.

2022 was a warm, generous vintage in Chianti Classico – Mediterranean fruit, balanced ripeness, distinct character. The Riserva exemplifies this: an intense ruby red with garnet hues. The bouquet offers sour cherry, blackberry, violet, cedar wood, a hint of tobacco and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with elegantly integrated tannins, fresh acidity and a long, mineral final. The promise Monsanto has been making since 1962 – delivered once again in this vintage. "The Chianti Classico Riserva 2022 is an intoxicating, spirited wine. Aromas of dark cherries and plums, leather, incense, cloves and mocha are indicative of a particularly dense vintage for this bottling, though this is attributable to an extremely warm, dry year. Whilst the Riserva is rather sombre, it is at the same time complex, multi-layered and utterly beguiling. It unfolds beautifully on the finish.
