For many years now, Istine has been vinifying a small and carefully selected portion of its Sangiovese separately according to the vineyard's origin, in order to highlight and bring to life the specific characteristics of the site, the soil and the altitude. Since then, the finest grapes from the estate's own vineyards – Istine (Radda), Casanova dell'Aia (Radda) and Cavarchione (Gaiole) have been vinified separately, resulting in three now highly sought-after cru wines, of which just 3,000 bottles are released each year to specialist retailers and the hospitality sector.

Vigna Casanova dell'Aia is airy, light and graceful on the palate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, chalk and white pepper rise from the glass in this very fine, exceptionally nuanced Chianti Classico. It is arguably the most ethereal wine in the high-calibre Istine collection; on the palate, notes of red berries and cherries are flanked by fine, almost silky tannins, leading into an elegant, flowing finish with remarkable staying power. "What a difference the vineyard site makes. The Vigna Casanova dell'Aia is one of two Gran Selezione wines from the Radda UGA and is situated at a similar altitude to the Vigna Istine; both are planted on limestone marl. However, this vineyard faces south and has a higher proportion of clay. It has a deeper colour, darker fruit, a more robust structure and a richer texture. It also takes longer to open up. Nevertheless, the dark red cherries and raspberries are noticeably more authentic. The palate is full of iron-rich minerals and bitter herbs. The chalky tannins come to the fore, and the juicy acidity ensures a pleasant mouthfeel. A stony final is endless." Decanter
