For many years, a small and strictly selected portion of the Sangiovese at Istine has been vinified separately according to the origin of the vineyard in order to emphasise and bring out the specific characteristics of the site, the soil and the altitude. Since then, the best grapes from the estate's own vineyards Istine (Radda), Casanova dell'Aia (Radda) and Cavarchione (Gaiole) have been vinified separately, resulting in three now highly sought-after cru wines, of which just 3,000 bottles are sold in specialised shops and restaurants every year.

Vigna Casanova dell'Aia is airy, weightless and graceful in flavour. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, chalk and white pepper rise from the glass in this very beautiful, incredibly nuanced Chianti Classico. Arguably the most ethereal wine in the high-class Istine collection, flavours of red berries and cherries are flanked by a fine, almost silky tannin on the palate and lead into an elegant, flowing finish with remarkable memorable potential. "The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Casanova dell'Aia 2022 smells of dried herbs, menthol, sage, tobacco, white pepper, mint and scorched earth. Straightforward in its contours and yet brooding, Casanova dell'Aia is a very expressive wine from Radda. It stands out in this tasting. This site has clearly coped well with the rigours of the growing season. Light, salty notes extend the explosive finish on the palate. "What a difference the location makes. The Vigna Casanova dell'Aia is one of two Gran Selezione of the UGA of Radda and lies at a similar altitude to the Vigna Istine, and both stand on limestone marls. However, this site is south-facing and has a higher proportion of clay. It has a deeper colour, darker fruit, a stronger structure and a richer texture. It is also slower to develop. Nevertheless, the dark red cherries and raspberries are noticeably more original. The palate is full of ferrous minerals and bitter herbs. The chalky tannins present themselves in the foreground and the juicy acidity provides a pleasant mouthfeel. A stony final is endless." Decanter
