In the early decades of the 19th century, one man shaped the landscape of Bolgheri like no other: Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an ancestor of the Incisa family, commissioned the construction of the area’s first mills and churches, laid out fields and designed the Viale dei Cipressi – that famous avenue of cypresses which Carducci immortalised and which still marks the entrance to Tenuta San Guido today. This wine is dedicated to the pioneer of this landscape. Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, who had long maintained that he wished to produce just one wine, recognised in the mid-1990s the potential of new plots along the Viale dei Cipressi, on clay-loam soils that proved particularly well-suited to Merlot. The first harvest was in 2000. Today: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot, from vines with an average age of 18 years. Hand-harvested, short maceration, indigenous yeasts, malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, followed by 12 months in French barriques, approximately 40% of which are new.
A brilliant purplish red. The bouquet is complex and fresh: lavender, redcurrant, thyme, bergamot and blood orange. On the palate, it offers good freshness and balanced acidity, with well-integrated tannins; the finish is long and characterised by a pleasant minerality. Guidalberto: the name of the man who built the road to Bolgheri. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Guidalberto 2024 displays spice and vigour on the mid-palate and initially reveals fragrant cherry notes, characterised by the balanced blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is lively and powerful in character, with pronounced aromas and fine definition, supported by a lively acidity that keeps the palate fresh and agile. The tannins have a hint of dryness, which lends the wine grip and structure, whilst the overall impression remains energetic and easy to enjoy." Wine Advocate
"The Guidalberto, which is made from almost equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, continues to offer impressive value, though buyers should be aware that the 2024 vintage is a lighter wine with less concentrated fruit than in previous years. However, those who give this vintage a chance will be rewarded with a juicy core of dark berries, velvety tannins and notes of cherry and pomegranate. Lively herbal and floral aromas make this wine so inviting. Airy, uncomplicated and a real delight." Decanter
"Aromas of redcurrants, cedar, mahogany, bark and orange peel leave no doubt that this is a typical Tuscan wine. It is of medium body and captivates with its softness and freshness, which leave you wanting more. Very soft yet refined tannins. Juicy and subtle. Delicious even now." James Suckling
