In 1994, when Lodovico Antinori was looking for suitable land for the expansion of his Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, he discovered the hills of Bibbona almost by chance, which were to rewrite his destiny as a winemaker. What he found there was not just land – it was a revelation. The soils, a complex symphony of clay and the legendary Bolgheri conglomerate, the orientation of the slopes, the salty breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea – everything spoke a different language to the familiar Ornellaia terroir. Too different, too wild, too full of character for a simple extension. And yet too fascinating to let go.

Eight years later, after the sale of Ornellaia, he returned. This time with his brother Piero – a reconciliation of two giants of the Tuscan wine world who would forever associate their names with this project. Il Pino di Biserno became their first wine together, named after the majestic pine tree that has watched over the vineyards for generations. The cuvée is dominated by Cabernet Franc with its aristocratic elegance, followed by silky Merlot and the structure-giving Bordeaux classics. Twelve months of ageing in French barriques, some new, some used, give the wine a depth that alternates between youthful vigour and timeless finesse.

A ruby-red cosmos of beguiling intensity unfolds in the glass. The nose reveals dark fruit in its noblest form – not sweet, but rather pervaded by mineral clarity, enveloped by the scents of the Mediterranean scrub: rosemary, myrtle, a hint of lavender. Underneath, the fine toastiness of the wood, never dominant, always serving. The true greatness of this wine unfolds on the palate: full-bodied and yet imbued with a freshness that only the sea can give. The tannins, polished like Carrara marble, support a structure of impressive architecture. The terroir of Bibbona speaks its own language here – salty, mineral, lively.
