The Terratico di Bibbona DOC would be a natural choice – yet Biserno has deliberately opted against it. The appellation is tailored to Sangiovese, whilst Cabernet Sauvignon thrives particularly well on the estate's hillsides. They prefer to stick with the more open Toscana IGT rather than be bound by a designation of origin that only partially reflects their own terroir. The estate was established in 2001, when brothers Piero and Lodovico Antinori, together with their nephew Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi – son of their sister Ilaria – and partner Umberto Mannoni, discovered the hills near Bibbona in the upper Maremma. On 40 hectares at an altitude of 90 metres, on alluvial, clay-limestone soil containing calcium carbonate and pebbles, the estate's most prestigious wine, the Biserno Rosso, was created.

The 2023 vintage began with mild weather, before rainfall in late May and early June replenished the soil's water reserves, which the vines drew upon throughout a dry summer. The harvest took place in three stages, from Merlot in late August to Cabernet Sauvignon in late September. After three to four weeks of maceration in steel tanks, the wine matures for around 16 months in predominantly new French oak barrels.

An intense, deep ruby red with a brilliant sheen. The nose is complex and fruit-driven, with balsamic and Mediterranean notes, complemented by pepper and nutmeg from the oak and a hint of smoke. On the palate, it is generous and enveloping, with silky tannins, juicy fruit and a long, spicy finish. An IGT that prefers to remain true to itself rather than be pigeonholed into a DOC category to which it does not belong. SUPERIORE.DE
