The heart of the Lageder revolution beats on the spectacular steep slope of the Römigberg, where Lake Kaltern stretches like a mirror at the foot of the vines. Here, on the plot of land that has always borne the name Herz – latin "Cor" – alois Lageder dared to do the impossible in 1986: In an unprecedented act of courage, he planted the first large vineyard in South Tyrol in dense planting on a wire frame, radically breaking with the centuries-old pergola tradition. What began as a scandal became a legend. Working with winegrowers from all over the world – the legendary Robert Mondavi from California and several chateau owners from Bordeaux – inspired Lageder to make this visionary decision. He recognised that the steep south-southeast-facing slopes between 250 and 330 metres, characterised by stony, gravelly dolomite limestone over ancient moraine deposits from the third ice age, had the potential for world-class wines. Here, where warm Mediterranean influences meet Alpine coolness and intense sunshine meets millions of years of geological history, conditions of unique complexity are created.
Cor Römigberg embodies the ideal of the closed farm organism in its purest form: Cows and oxen graze among the vines and olive trees, while biodynamic farming according to the strictest Demeter guidelines sets the rhythm. This harmonious symbiosis between man, animal and plant characterises every aspect of the winemaking process. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon is combined with 10% Petit Verdot to create a blend of exceptional concentration. The vinification follows principles that have been tried and tested over decades: Spontaneous maceration in wooden barrels and stainless steel tanks, sometimes with whole grapes, followed by ageing in small and large wooden barrels for several months. Subsequent bottle ageing of around one year completes the development of this monumental Cabernet.
The result is pure elegance in power: deep purple announces its concentration, while complex aromas of black cherries, cassis and blackberries with earthy autumnal tones, balsamic notes and crushed stones unfold a symphony of the senses. Powerful on the palate, yet with a light-footedness that gives the wine great lift on the final. A Cabernet that pushes the boundaries of what is possible and is unrivalled south of the Alps – the beating heart of Lageder's wine philosophy. SUPERIORE.DE
"Silky fruit, dried herbs, hint of paprika, light chocolate. Bright and spicy, firm and almost sparse with firm, clean tannins, idiosyncratic." Weinwisser
"A delightful nose of cigar box spices and smoked tobacco draws you into the glass, where the fragrant overtone continues. This finely meshed version offers notes of ripe red and blackcurrant with slightly chalky tannins and hints of olive, espresso and smoke. This seductive red wine is fresh, elegant and expressive." Wine Spectator
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Cor Römigberg shows a very concentrated and rich fruit that gives the wine a heavy centre of gravity. This fruit density is accompanied by lifted flavours of sour cherry, Valentine's Day red rose and scented candle. All these elements are framed by a beautiful minerality. The tannins reveal a very dry quality and the flavours accurately reflect the cool alpine influences." Wine Advocate
"A complex wine full of darkness. On the nose there are notes of leather, cocoa powder, blackberries and a hint of paprika. The intensity is overwhelming. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with a long, lively and integrated acidity, velvety tannins and a chalky and slightly rustic finish." James Suckling
