Verduno offers a different perspective on Barolo. The appellation's northernmost municipality lies on the banks of the Tanaro, in the immediate vicinity of the Barbaresco hills – and Monvigliero, the village's crowning amphitheatre, transforms this pleasure into a mystery: Soils of Marne di Sant'Agata, 55% clay, 30% sand, 15% limestone; slopes facing south and south-west; 240 metres above sea level. A terroir with elements from the Tortonian and Serravalian periods, which is geologically unique – and produces a Nebbiolo that displays more fragrance than structure, more elegance than bulk. To achieve this, Vietti employs whole-bunch fermentation – a rare choice for Barolo, which gives the Monvigliero that airy, herb-scented profile for which the vineyard is famous. The 44-year-old vines – dense, low-yielding, deeply rooted – were harvested at the end of September. This was followed by three to four days of cold maceration, 20 days of contact with the must, malolactic fermentation in used barriques, and 24 months in large wooden casks.

A transparent, luminous ruby red with an orange rim. On the nose, violets, roses, cola, blueberries and white pepper – ethereal and with a surprising sense of tranquillity.
