Some layers are loud, others whisper. Cerequio is one of the whisperers – and if you don't listen carefully, you will miss the subtle nuances that make this cru one of the most enigmatic in the entire Barolo universe. Surrounded by its most prestigious neighbours La Morra, Cerequio lies at an altitude of 300 metres above a foundation of white clay and bluish marl. Roberto Voerzio likes to compare his Cerequio wines with Haut-Brion – an unusual comparison for a Barolo, but anyone who tastes this wine will understand the allusion: it is about that ethereal elegance that unfolds rather than imposes itself. What distinguishes Cerequio from the more powerful crus is its almost floating lightness. Voerzio speaks of "round, elegant, ethereal" – attributes that are rarely associated with Barolo. But this is precisely where the magic lies: Cerequio combines density with finesse, concentration with airiness. The 24-month maturation in French barriques and large barrels has given the wine depth without stifling its youthful grace.
The 2021 is perfumed right from the start: Cherry, strawberry and rose petals dominate the nose, underpinned by restrained liquorice, mint, Parma violets and an earthy minerality. In the glass, a play of colours of light ruby with garnet-red reflections emerges – nothing deep, nothing heavy, just transparency. The palate reveals the Cerequio architecture: full-bodied, but not massive, with ultra-fine polished tannins that run through the wine like a continuous cylinder. The acidity is lively, precise, energetic – it gives the wine backbone without ever making it seem harsh. Notes of dried fruit, truffle, eucalyptus and a hint of sweet clove linger on the long, complex final. A Barolo that is already drinking today, but will only show its full potential in a decade's time – for those who value elegance over power, nuance over vigour. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cerequio shows what it is made of, especially in a great annata like 2021: a potpourri of cherries and blood oranges, accompanied by herbal and spicy notes; complex on the palate, the tannins fine-grained, perfectly supported by the precise acidity, of great length." Vinum
"A powerhouse – dynamic and laser-focused – offering up crunchy red berry fruit and brown baking spices, with pomegranate seed nuances and layers of tobacco, tar, fragrant rose petal and rose stem. It’s tightly wound and coiled, with tremendous tension and just the first hints of fragrant, savoury dried sage and underbrush beginning to emerge." Decanter
"A wine of great transparency and depth. Restrained liquorice, mint, strawberries, watermelon, Parma violets and earthy minerality dominate the nose. On the palate, it shows a full body, freshness and lush, soaring tannins. Thanks to its elegance, it's almost drinkable now, but try it from 2026, when it will be at its best after a decade."
