There are sites in the Barolo universe that are not simply vineyards – they are geological statements. Brunate is one of these rare terroirs whose names alone elicit reverent silence. Situated between La Morra and Barolo, on calcareous marl soils with an east-south-east exposure, this cru site produces wines of archaic power and finesse at the same time. Actually a paradox ... Roberto Voerzio has been cultivating his plot in Brunate since the late 1980s with a radicalism that is unrivalled: 8,000 vines per hectare, only 500 grams of grapes per vine, aggressive yield reduction through green harvest. What sounds like self-mortification is in fact an uncompromising philosophy of quality. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel takes between 10 and 30 days, after which the wine matures for 24 months in used barriques and large barrels, followed by eight months in steel and a further eight in the bottle. Each phase is a deliberate wait for the right moment.
The 2021 Brunate unfolds aromas of black cherry and raspberry, underpinned by notes of ground espresso, cocoa and a hint of fresh mint. The typical Brunate architecture is revealed on the palate: taut, mineral-influenced tannins that structure the wine like a tightly woven net, vibrant acidity that creates tension and a concentration of fruit with an almost fleshy texture. The final is of dry elegance and impressive length – a wine that does not want to please, but needs to be understood. Voerzio has not created a charmer from Brunate, but a thinker in a glass. A Barolo for purists, which will reveal in ten years what is still locked away today. SUPERIORE.DE
"Multi-faceted bouquet that gains complexity with aeration; full of finesse in the mouth, the tannins are tightly woven but powerful, the concise acidity ensures an elegant, light-footed final with lots of fruit and spice." Vinum
"Aromatics of crushed cocoa nibs, black cherry and raspberry fruit, with medium-roast ground espresso and a spearmint character. Pomegranate seed notes frame the soaring, gripping tannins, which carry a distinct mineral intensity. A lengthy, bone-dry finish offers a snapshot of some of the purest, juiciest most fleshy cherry fruit you could ever hope to encounter in life." Decanter
"This Barolo shows powerful fruit, bright red cherries, violets, roses and hints of chocolate and blood oranges. The attack is amazing, almost silky, with a medium to full body, crisp acidity, firm, velvety tannins and a dusty but dense finish." James Suckling
