There are wines that take their time to seduce, and there are those that immediately know how to charm. Fossati belongs to the second category – not because this Barolo lacks depth or structure, but because it presents its qualities with an elegance reminiscent of the shop windows of noble Florentine boutiques. Located to the west of La Morra, at an altitude of 350 metres, the vines rest on stony, light soils with layers of clay. The roots dig up to ten metres deep – a silent struggle that gives the wine its distinctive aromatic vibrancy. Roberto Voerzio describes his Fossati wines as deeply coloured, with distinctive tannins and intense aromas.
The 2021 fulfils this expectation with almost playful ease: wild berries and dark cherries in the foreground, accompanied by notes of the finest leather and aged tobacco – the kind that connoisseurs buy for a fortune. Dried rose petals, liquorice and a hint of truffle lend the bouquet its complexity. A medium-bodied yet powerful texture unfolds on the palate: silky tannins with a leathery, tobacco-tinted character, underpinned by an iron-like minerality that gives the wine its backbone. What distinguishes Fossati from the more monumental crus is its accessibility – not a resistance, but an invitation. The 24-month maturation in large French oak barrels has given the wine roundness without dampening its freshness. The final is long, savoury and mineral – like the aftertaste of an evening in a Michelin-starred restaurant in the Langhe. Fossati does not require years of patience to be understood. It is already enjoyable now, but will continue to grow in complexity over the next 15 to 20 years. A Barolo for those who appreciate refinement without sacrificing substance. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegant nose of strawberries and flowers, undergrowth and mushrooms; juicy texture, the tannins robust but light-footed, lingering fruity final." Vinum
"This wine shows dark chocolate, dark currant, blue fruit and undertones of cedar. The palate is full and chewy, with a dark, brooding fruit profile, but plenty of integrity and a firm tannic structure. Very well constructed, with admirable precision." James Suckling
