2006 was the year in which Franco and Roberto Massolino had the courage to leave the confines of Serralunga. Parussi – a vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, one and a half hectares at an altitude of 290 metres, situated on the crest of a hill where the vines fluctuate between south-east and south-west. A challenge. Because anyone who has spent a lifetime studying the calcareous soils of Serralunga has to rethink things in Castiglione: there is less lime here, but more clay and magnesium. Richer soils. More energetic vines. A different terroir – and the Nebbiolo, this sensitive grape variety, translates every nuance into sensation.
The result surprised even the brothers. The Parussi has been vinified separately since 2007, and it quickly became clear: this is not another Serralunga. This is Castiglione in its purest form – balanced, refined, with that silky texture that is typical of wines from this village. The vinification remains the same as for the "Barolo brothers" from Serralunga: long maceration in oak vats at 30 degrees, thirty months in large Slavonian barrels, one year in the bottle. Only the grapes speak a different language.
Deep garnet red colour. Ethereal, enveloping aromas of sweet spices, sandalwood, tobacco and leather – intense, persistent, with mineral notes due to the sandy soil. Great structure on the palate, distinctive tannins that will refine over the years. And then: that endlessly long finish that is the hallmark of Castiglione Falletto. Austere, yes. Important, no doubt. But with a refinement that is accessible earlier than the monumental wines from Serralunga. A Barolo that proves that Nebbiolo has the ability to capture even the smallest differences in microclimate and create magic from them – and create magic from them. SUPERIORE.DE
"Gently shining ruby colour with garnet-red reflections. Fresh, sveltebouquet of raspberry, sour cherry and hibiscus, with some undergrowth behind it. On the palate, however, with a sweet, soft fruity flavour, compact tannin structure, supportive acidity, balanced and persistent finish." Falstaff
"The Barolo Parussi 2021 is once again very impressive. It is such a complete wine, combining elegance with subtle texture and persistence. Candied red fruits, spices and floral accents reveal a hint of raciness that develops over time. Parussi is the last vineyard Massolino harvests, a choice that seems particularly well suited to this wine. The Parussi is expansive, complex and of captivating beauty - a true star." Vinous
"Although the Massolino family has been inextricably linked to Serralunga d'Alba since 1896, they ventured outside the village in 2006 with the purchase of almost 2 hectares in the MGA Parussi of Castiglione Falletto. The younger soils with a higher clay content allow the vines to grow more vigorously, and this vigour is reflected in 2021. The aromas of wild strawberries and cherries are underlined by tobacco and star anise. The palate reveals a bright pomegranate centre, enveloped in soft tannins – all with the elegance typical of the winery. Powdered stone and bitter herbs add further nuances." Decanter
"Bright and expressive, with tar, dried rose petals and crushed cranberries. The palate is medium-bodied with delicate, pronounced fruit. It is juicy and incisive, with precise, polished tannins and a delicate finish. It is very detailed and nuanced and is at the ethereal end of the spectrum." James Suckling
"The Barolo Parussi 2021 draws its fruit from Castiglione Falletto in the centre of the appellation with an interesting overlay of old and newer soils. This wine is not immediately aromatic and needs more time in the glass to develop and unfold. At this young stage, it delivers dense wild berries and a pretty note of crushed limestone. This elegant mineral note harmonises very well with the silky tannins. The Parussi excels in a balanced vintage like this one." Wine Advocate
