"Sibi et paucis" – for those who understand that great wines are in no hurry. From each Aleste vintage, Sandrone sets aside around 10% of the production and allows these bottles to mature in his own cellar for 96 months after ageing. What could have been released in September 2020 remains in storage to this day – and is becoming something that transcends ordinary Barolo.
Cannubi Boschis, a south-east-facing slope on Cannubi Hill in the village of Barolo, at an altitude of 250 metres. The soil is marl, moderately compact, interspersed with numerous layers of clay and sand. The Sandrone family has been cultivating this plot since 1985, and Luciano Sandrone's first wine later became the Aleste, named after his grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. The year 2016 threw a spanner in the works: A cool, rainy April and May were followed by an uneven summer; the best days did not arrive until late August and September, whilst in autumn, warm days and cool nights – with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees – brought the grapes to perfection. Harvesting took place from 13 to 22 October. The must undergoes spontaneous fermentation in open stainless-steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing in LitersFrench oak tonneaux. After being released in September 2020, the wine spends a further six years in the Sandrone family's private cellar.
Brilliant ruby-garnet. The nose is open and generous, with wild cherry and rose petals, complemented by hints of undergrowth. On the palate, it is rich yet balanced, powerful and structured, with an interplay of sweetness and tension that weaves together oak and fruit. The finish is long, with ripe, sweet tannins. This wine develops more slowly than most of its kind, so you should not open it before 2029 – if you can wait that long. It has a different name today, yet it still tastes of the hillside where it all began. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2016 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis is in superb form. It comes from the historic Cannubi Boschis cru in the village of Barolo, a vineyard renowned for combining aromatic complexity with an elegant texture. The wine displays notes of dark fruit, toasted spices and subtly developed aromas of tar, liquorice and red rose petals. The tannins are open and well-integrated, lending the wine a soft and graceful character on the palate." Wine Advocate
"A reserved yet broodingBarolo with aromas of meat, minerals, bark, liquorice, tar, plums and Parma violets. Graceful on the palate with firm, dusty tannins, extremely taut acidity, full body and notes of graphite. Supple elegance paired with power and an extremely long finish. Suitable for immediate enjoyment or for ageing." James Suckling
"The 2016 Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis is currently at its peak, yet still has plenty of potential for the future. Complex and opulent in the glass, the 2016 offers an intoxicating array of blue-violet fruit aromas, cloves, liquorice, menthol and chocolate. The resonant, long-lasting finish is extremely appealing. This is a classic Sandrone Barolo: rich and structured, yet by no means overbearing. "A thoroughly sensual wine from start to finish." Vinous
"Like an offensive lineman wearing a perfectly tailored Zegna suit, this is raw and extraordinary power dressed in breathtaking elegance. Spiced red fruits and dried pressed flowers give way to macerated dark plum, black cherry and licorice root with every sweet and savory spice imaginable woven through with effortless precision. A lot of wine. Smoked prime rib, a mountain of mushrooms and a few bottles." Wine Enthusiast
