Since the 2013 vintage, Luciano Sandrone's grandchildren have had their names featured on the label: ALESTE, a combination of Alessia and Stefano. The wine itself is older. As Barolo Cannubi Boschis, it was Luciano Sandrone's first wine, with the inaugural vintage dating from 1985. The vineyard is situated in the village of Barolo on a south-east-facing section of the Cannubi hill, at an altitude of 250 metres, in moderately compact marl soil. In the cellar, the must ferments spontaneously with natural yeasts in open stainless-steel tanks; malolactic fermentation and ageing follow in LitersFrench oak tonneaux, with 18 months' bottle ageing before release. The 2022 vintage is characterised by resilience: a dry autumn, early snow in December, 70 to 80 millimetres of rain within a few days in spring, followed by warm, dry weather with cool nights. The harvest took place around two weeks earlier than usual.
Cherry and raspberry come to the fore, accompanied by wood and minerality, fresh spices and undergrowth. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, yet not heavy; red fruit takes the lead, followed by spice and wood. The tannins are powerful; they will need a few more years to settle, and carry notes of red fruit and graphite into the finish. This Barolo is built to last for generations: its drinking window extends well beyond 2045. SUPERIORE.DE
"Brilliant ruby-garnet colour. On the nose, it is of medium intensity, with gentle notes of red berries and forest floor, accompanied by subtle lactic notes; hints of peach yoghurt, pear and ripe cherry on the finish, though not entirely precise. On the palate, it displays firm tannins, tightly integrated, with subtle fruit notes of raspberries and peach; unfortunately, the final is somewhat grating and slightly bitter." Falstaff
"A complex bouquet of black cherries, plums, pepper, sandalwood and violets; a full-bodied texture with robust, still very youthful tannins, supported by the acidity, with fresh redcurrants, sour cherries and leather in the finish." Vinum
"The 2022 Barolo Aleste captivates with juicy dark blue to violet fruit notes, lavender, menthol, liquorice and spices. It displays lovely juiciness on the mid-palate and remarkable harmony. All the typical characteristics of the Aleste are present without any rough edges, yet the 2022 vintage naturally lacks the breadth or dynamic energy of the finest vintages. Nevertheless, it opens up beautifully after a little time in the glass." Vinous
"The Luciano Sandrone 2022 Barolo Aleste captivates with its compelling balance between concentrated dark fruit aromas and a spicy, oak-driven complexity. With its full-bodied texture – by Nebbiolo standards – and its rich character, the wine reveals the traces of its ageing process through lingering notes of sweet spices, toasted nuts, black fruits and dried plums. The warmth of the vintage has enhanced the wine's depth and structural richness, yet the various elements remain well integrated and blend into a harmonious whole." Wine Advocate
"Macerated cherry and strawberry flavors highlight this dense, tightly wound red. Plum, orange peel, tar, iron and menthol notes add detail as this persists with midpalate intensity and a long, saturated aftertaste. Shows terrific harmony and length." Wine Spectator
"Blood oranges and rose petals. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and displays pronounced yet evenly distributed tannins, complemented by lovely fruit flavours with subtle yet lively acidity. Clean, with very pleasant, slightly grippy tannins on the finish. Suitable for drinking now or for ageing." James Suckling
"An aromatic explosion of lively, fruity and warm notes, flowers and spiced tea, which impresses with a confidence and depth that builds on everything that has gone before. Lively and juicy on the palate, with clearly defined yet supple tannins that make this wine as approachable as brooding is brooding. Ready to drink now and will keep until 2050." Wine Enthusiast
