Grinzane Cavour, 240 metres above sea level. One of the few parcels in the entire denomination with a full southern exposure. The single vineyard Garretti epitomises the extraordinary harmony that once attracted Giorgio Rivetti when he decided to expand into the Barolo region in 2001. Here, where seventy-year-old Nebbiolo vines are rooted in alluvial soils with a calcareous clay layer, wines of remarkable balance are produced. The site benefits from exceptional ventilation due to its distance from the hill opposite – a microclimatic advantage that ensures exceptional temperature fluctuations and preserves freshness even in the hottest years.

The 2021 vintage presents itself as an accessible, charming Barolo – an almost aristocratic response to the sometimes overly powerful previous vintages. The vinification follows the tried and tested principles of La Spinetta: 14 to 15 days of maceration and alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature, malolactic fermentation in used French barriques from the second passage. 24 months of ageing in wood, followed by twelve months of bottle ageing before release – patience is an integral part of the philosophy. La Spinetta deliberately refrains from using new barrels for this cru so as not to mask the fruit and elegance of the terroir.

Medium, bright ruby red in the glass. The bouquet opens with spicy, warming aromas of cedar wood, ripe cherries, dried herbs and leather. Crushed flowers, red cherry fruit, spices and tobacco unfold on the palate, enveloped by silky tannins. The wine is soft, open and accessible – a Barolo with a medium-term pleasure window that does not have to wait for decades. Complex, velvety tannins carry the generous fruit through to the long finish. This is a powerful yet harmonious Barolo that combines sweet, rich aromas of ripe fruit and spices with the noble structure of Grinzane Cavour. SUPERIORE.DE
