There are wines that possess that unmistakable clarity which captures the essence of the terroir without beating about the bush. Fontanabianca's classic Barbaresco is just such a wine – blended from various plots around Neive, vinified with the precision that Matteo Pola, the third generation of the family, has made the estate's philosophy. Whilst the single-vineyard wines Bordini and Serraboella express the specific characteristics of their crus, this Barbaresco paints the bigger picture: 5.5 hectares on the municipality's typical limestone-clay soils, 300 metres above sea level, where Nebbiolo has, for generations, developed the elegance for which Neive is renowned in the world of Barbaresco.
A brilliant ruby red with garnet-red highlights. The nose reveals the characteristic elegance and harmony that distinguish Barbaresco from Neive: aromas of plum and mushrooms mingle with notes of cherry skin, dried strawberries and a hint of rose petals. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and lively, with silky, finely polished tannins and a refreshing acidity that lends the Nebbiolo structure and length. The texture is supple, almost dance-like, with notes of red berries, orange peel, crushed stone and subtle herbs. The final lingers elegantly across the palate – not with the power of the great crus, but with that crystalline clarity and Piedmontese finesse that defines an authentic Barbaresco from Neive. "In the bottle with the white label, the Fontanabianca 2023 Barbaresco offers easy fruit notes of wild berry and cassis with hints of tarry spice and sweet lavender on the finish. Sourced from the estate's holdings in Bordini, Serraboella and Starderi, the wine is fermented in stainless steel before aging in large oak casks, preserving the purity of the fruit. It maintains a steady, balanced approach, but one of the defining characteristics of this warm vintage is its accessibility and early-drinking appeal. This Barbaresco is a perfect case in point." Wine Advocate
"Cascading layers of red cherry and plum intertwine with classic rose petals and forest floor, whilst subtle hints of liquorice and warm spices add a touch of intrigue. On the palate, it unfolds with graceful power, like a silk scarf in the wind. The classic Barbaresco tannins are present but refined, hinting at a bright future. A wine that exudes old-school charm."
