![Chardonnay Alto Adige DOC 2025]()
Chardonnay Alto Adige DOC 2025
Full-bodied yet refreshing – this is how Peter Zemmers’ Chardonnay from the finest vineyards around Kurtinig in South Tyrol’s Unterland region presents itself. The vines, grafted onto low-growth rootstocks and trained using the Guyot system, benefit from their favourable location in the valley floor, ideal sunlight and good air circulation around the grapes. The hand-picked grapes are left to macerate on their skins for a few hours in a cool place before pressing – a step that transfers the fruity aromas from the skins into the must and intensifies the bouquet. Following gentle pressing and natural sedimentation, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 19 °C in stainless steel tanks.

!["Misto Mare" Bianco Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2025]()
“Misto Mare” Bianco Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2025
A wine like an ecosystem: Misto Mare is no ordinary white wine, but a polyphonic ode to nature from the Alois Lageder winery. The blend combines grapes from over 14 white and red grape varieties grown in organically or biodynamically managed vineyards that are currently in the process of transitioning to organic certification. The grapes come from a wide range of altitudes across South Tyrol – a reflection of the region's diversity, captured in a single wine. The name draws on the region's geological past: around 200 million years ago, South Tyrol was covered by a primeval sea. Today, vines grow on what was once the seabed, their complexity evoking the former depths and the intricate balance of marine ecosystems.

!["Oasi Mantellina" Lugana DOC 2025]()
“Oasi Mantellina” Lugana DOC 2025
Since the 16th century, the Allegrini family has been one of the driving forces behind Valpolicella. Then, at some point, the desire arose to produce a white wine from Lake Garda. The Tenuta Oasi Mantellina in Pozzolengo – on the southern shore of Lake Garda, in the province of Brescia – became their answer. The name reflects what this patch of land is: a natural oasis, rich in biodiversity, swept by the breezes of Lake Garda, set on clay-rich moraine soils that give the Turbiana its characteristic minerality. 96% Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana), 4% Cortese, hand-harvested in September, gentle pressing, stainless steel, four months on the fine lees, two months in bottle.

!["Vigneto Dirupo" Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG 2025 brut]()
“Vigneto Dirupo” Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG 2025 brut
Whilst Andreola’s Rive wines each bring a single vineyard to the glass, the Dirupo tells a different story: that of the entire Denominazione. For this Brut, Stefano Pola draws on the privilege of a network of vineyards stretching across all 15 municipalities of the Valdobbiadene DOCG – from gentle slopes at 200 metres to the extremely steep slopes at 500 metres, on calcareous marl, sandstone, conglomerates and deep clay soils. No other wine from the estate reflects the territory so fully. The choice of grape varieties underlines this approach: 90% Glera, complemented by Bianchetta and Perera – —two indigenous varieties of the hills that have long since disappeared from standard Prosecco and which, as quiet contributors here, enrich the aromatic depth.

!["Mongrana" Bianco Toscana IGT 2025 (BIO)]()
“Mongrana” Bianco Toscana IGT 2025 (BIO)
In the 16th century, Ludovico Ariosto had the knights of the House of Mongrana ride through fantastical landscapes in Orlando Furioso – adventurous, freedom-loving, always ready to set off. The hippogriff, the winged hybrid creature that carries one beyond all boundaries, is the symbol of this epic. Querciabella has featured both on the label of its Maremma project: the name, the creature, the ethos. Since 1997, Querciabella has been cultivating vineyards in Banditella near Alberese – right on the Tuscan coast, where sea breezes, salty air and sandy soils shape the Mediterranean character of the wine. 100% Vermentino, 20,000 bottles, organically farmed. Fermentation in small concrete and steel tanks, carried out gently and precisely. The 2025 vintage saw a balanced spring and cool nights, which slowed ripening, preserved acidity and concentrated the aromas.

!["Capitel San Rocco" Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore DOC 2022]()
“Capitel San Rocco” Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore DOC 2022
The grapes for this Ripasso come from the Marne Bianche vineyard at Tenuta Maternigo – a vineyard that the Tedeschi family has been cultivating for generations. Corvina and Corvinone (35% each), Rondinella (20 per cent) and 10 per cent indigenous varieties such as Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara and Dindarella grow here on moraine loam and limestone at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. Vinification follows the classic Ripasso method: after 15 days’ maceration at 28°C, the young Valpolicella undergoes secondary fermentation on the pomace of Amarone and Recioto – for eight to ten days at a cool 18°C. This second fermentation lends the wine body and depth without stifling its freshness. It is then aged for 15 months in Slavonian oak and a further six months in the bottle.

!["La Rivetta 120" Prosecco Spumante di Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG extra brut]()
“La Rivetta 120” Prosecco Spumante di Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG extra brut
The ‘120’ in the name refers to the number of days: exactly 120 days of ageing on the fine lees following the second fermentation in the autoclave. In the Charmat method, this is unusual – a level of patience more commonly associated with the Metodo Classico, but which has been deliberately applied to Prosecco here. The name La Rivetta refers to Villa Sandi’s most famous location: its own vineyard in Cartizze, the Grand Cru of Valdobbiadene. The 120 does not come from Cartizze – but from the surrounding hills of San Pietro di Barbozza, on morainic soils with calcareous sandstone and clay. 100% Glera, hand-harvested, maximum yield 120 Doppelzentner per hectare. Gentle whole-bunch pressing, controlled fermentation at 15–16 °C – followed by the aforementioned 120 days.

!["26° Primo" Valdobbiadene Superiore Rive di Col San Martino DOCG 2025 extra brut]()
“26° Primo” Valdobbiadene Superiore Rive di Col San Martino DOCG 2025 extra brut
Some wines are historical records. The 26° Primo is both: a wine and a historical record in one. The name commemorates the 26th year of the founding of Azienda Agricola Andreola: 2009, when Nazzareno Pola handed the estate over to his son Stefano and, at the same time, the appellation achieved DOCG status. A wine that serves as a baton passed between generations, between an ancient winemaking tradition and its modern aspirations. The grapes come from the estate's oldest core holding: around four hectares of steep slopes in Col San Martino, the village in the southernmost part of the hills between Vidor and Vittorio Veneto, where Andreola has had its roots since its foundation. The vineyards lie at altitudes of 300 to 500 metres, partly on limestone conglomerate soils and partly on calcareous marl, interspersed with centuries-old Glera vines and small proportions of indigenous varieties such as Bianchetta, Perera and Verdiso. The slopes are so steep that all work must be carried out by hand.

“Col del Forno” Valdobbiadene Superiore Rive di Refrontolo DOCG 2025 brut
Refrontolo lies on the eastern edge of the Denominazione – quieter, warmer, and a shade cooler than the steep slopes of the core zone. The Col del Forno vineyard is a natural amphitheatre covering around four hectares at an altitude of 250 metres, nestled between woods and terraced slopes. Andreola acquired the plot in 2016 – and from the very start, the wine has been one of the most compelling in the entire Rive range. What distinguishes Refrontolo from Col San Martino is not quality, but character. The clay-marl soils, featuring karst formations dating from before the last Ice Age, reliably retain moisture – ensuring a stable water supply for the vines even in dry years. Temperatures are slightly higher than in the western part of the appellation, meaning ripening begins earlier. The result is not wines of intense floral character, but Glera with a rich, ripe fruitiness: hawthorn, wisteria, apple, peach and yellow citrus fruits – a warmer, more complex spectrum of aromas.

“Kleinstein” Gewürztraminer Alto Adige DOC 2024
High above Bolzano, where the steep porphyry slopes of the Ritten rise 650 metres into the Alpine air, one of South Tyrol’s most distinctive Gewürztraminers thrives. Kleinstein is the result of uncompromising selection: Cellar master Stephan Filippi selects grapes exclusively from those vineyards where the volcanic terroir and the extreme day-night temperature fluctuations draw out the full aromatic power of this regal grape variety. These privileged plots on the Ritten tell a geological story: Ancient volcanic rock and mineral-rich weathered soils create a terroir of rare intensity. Here, the Gewürztraminer grapes ripen under the South Tyrolean sun, whilst cool mountain winds provide the freshness that gives this premium wine its impressive balance.

![Vinschgauer Weißburgunder Alto Adige DOC 2023]()
Vinschgauer Weißburgunder Alto Adige DOC 2023
The Vinschgau is the driest valley in the Alps – less than 500 millimetres of rainfall per year, intense sunshine, dramatic temperature fluctuations between day and night. Not an obvious place for great wine. And yet: Franz Pratzner has believed in it since 1989 – when he gradually transformed the family fruit-growing business above Hochnaturn Castle into a vineyard. Today, Falkenstein is regarded as one of South Tyrol’s most distinctive estates. The Pinot Blanc grows on dry, ancient porphyry soil, on steep south-facing slopes between 550 and 900 metres – austere, mineral, uncompromising. Hand-harvested in mid- to late September. Then comes the estate’s hallmark: fermentation in large acacia wood casks, ten months on the coarse lees. No stainless steel neutrality, no barrique influence – acacia gives the wine a delicate, creamy texture without detracting from its freshness. This is followed by around twelve months’ bottle ageing.

!["Buchholz" Chardonnay Alto Adige DOC 2024]()
“Buchholz” Chardonnay Alto Adige DOC 2024
Buchholz – as early as the Austrian land register of 1858, the name referred to the valley slopes above Salurn, where terraced vineyards lie on dolomite sedimentary rock at altitudes between 400 and 800 metres. Peter Zemmer, whose family has been making wine in Kurtinig on the Weinstraße since 1928, has chosen this diverse site for his Chardonnay: a mosaic of microclimates and soils that combines alpine freshness with southern ripeness. In the mornings, the breeze from the north cools the vines; in the afternoons, the ‘Ora’ from the south warms them: a daily cycle that gives the grapes time to develop. The winemaking process is deliberately restrained: a short cold maceration to preserve the fruit, followed by fermentation at 19°C in large wooden barrels.

!["Sansonina" Lugana DOC 2025 (BIO)]()
“Sansonina” Lugana DOC 2025 (BIO)
Tenuta Sansonina is situated in the south of Lake Garda, not far from Sirmione – where the lake breathes across the hills and the soils tell the story of what the last Ice Age left behind: A deep, clayey mixture of chalk and silt that stores water, buffers heat and gives the Turbiana grape that distinctive minerality which sets Lugana apart from everything else. Thirteen hectares, organically farmed, with vines around sixty years old – vines that know just how deep they need to reach. 100 per cent Trebbiano di Lugana, hand-harvested and carefully selected before the grapes reach the winery. The must is first cold-fermented statically, then ferments for around ten to twelve days in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. Six months’ ageing in stainless steel tanks, followed by one month in the bottle: no oak, no interference, just the wine and its terroir.

![Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2024]()
Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2024
Riesling has been at home in the Vinschgau Valley since around 1840 – , having been introduced from German-speaking regions, where it was tolerated amongst fruit trees and Pinot Blanc. Yet its potential in these extreme terroirs went largely unrecognised for over a century and a half. It is only since the 1990s that the valley has shown what it is truly capable of. Franz Pratzner is one of those who realised this early on. His Riesling vines are planted on the Sonnenberg in the Vinschgau Valley, on the steepest south-facing slopes between 600 and 900 metres – of dry, ancient porphyry bedrock, with barren conditions, maximum sunshine and cool nights. Riesling is a late-ripening variety that takes time: harvest only takes place in early to mid-October, when the aromas have fully developed at this altitude. Then comes the winery’s signature style: fermentation in large acacia wood barrels, ten months on the coarse lees, and around twelve months’ bottle ageing.

“Cuvée del Fondatore Graziano Merotto” Prosecco Spumante di Valdobbiadene Superiore Rive di Col San Martino DOCG 2025 brut
In 1973, Graziano Merotto purchased plot 86 in the Rive di Col San Martino – —an overgrown stretch of hillside still covered in woodland. He cleared it himself, planted Glera and began to shape the vineyard that would one day become his most important. Over fifty years later, this wine bears his name. The Cuvée del Fondatore is made exclusively from that historic plot – 230 metres above sea level, south-facing, clay and sand, with vines over 40 years old. Graziano Merotto’s decision in the cellar is unusual: maceration before pressing – a step that most producers skip – then the must goes straight into the autoclave, 60 days of secondary fermentation, followed by a further 180 days of ageing on its own lees. Almost nine months from must to bottle – a comparatively very long time for a Prosecco Superiore. 33,000 bottles, 670 magnums, 10 jeroboams.

![Blauburgunder Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2021]()
Blauburgunder Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2021
The only thing that has actually changed is the name. The Unterthiner family have always vinified their Pinot Noir in the manner befitting a serious Pinot Noir – with the necessary time in the cellar. The wine matures in small wooden barrels for at least twelve months, often longer, because at the Ebnerhof decisions are never made according to the calendar, but according to taste. This ageing period meets the DOC requirements for a Riserva, so the wine now bears this designation. The approach remains unchanged: following a selective hand-harvest from the limestone-rich, sandy south-facing slopes, the wine undergoes controlled maceration in stainless-steel tanks before being transferred to small wooden barrels, which lend it depth and complexity.

!["Pinzon" Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2023]()
“Pinzon” Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2023
Pinzon. A vineyard site that has long been regarded by connoisseurs as synonymous with top-quality South Tyrolean Pinot Noir. This small wine-growing village on the eastern side of the Adige Valley, first mentioned in records in 1230, lies amidst the vineyards that, along the Pinot Noir Trail, are counted amongst Italy’s finest Pinot Noir terroirs. Here, at an altitude of around 550 metres in the municipality of Montan, Peter Zemmer cultivates his vines on porphyry soils with deposits of dolomite carbonate rock – —a geological combination that lends the wine its characteristic minerality. The microclimate of the site is shaped by its elevation above the Adige floodplain and its north-westerly aspect, which grants the vineyards long hours of evening sunshine. The ‘Ora’, that famous valley wind which rises from Lake Garda through the Adige Valley, cools the vines in the afternoon and regulates humidity – ideal conditions for this demanding Burgundian variety.

Praesulis Sauvignon Blanc unfolds in the glass with hints of aromatic herbs and lemon zest, accompanied by gooseberries, grapefruit and elderberries. ![Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 (BIO)]()
Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Two names define this Riserva: Il Corno and Poggio Selvale. It is from these two prime vineyards, situated at altitudes of between 350 and 450 metres, that the Sangiovese grapes come from which Castello di Radda crafts its classic Riserva style. The clay-limestone soils, with their high proportion of galestro and alberese – that characteristic calcareous slate of the region – , lend the wine mineral depth and structural complexity. In this coolest zone of Chianti Classico, where dense forests surround the vineyards and the temperature fluctuations between day and night are particularly pronounced, the Sangiovese reveals its most elegant side. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in 50-hectolitre stainless-steel tanks. Maceration on the skins lasts three to four weeks – a luxury afforded only by fully ripe grapes from prime vineyards. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood before the wine begins its 20-month ageing process: in second- and third-use French tonneaux and in 20-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels. Nine months’ bottle ageing completes the wine’s development.

!["Cuvée Imperiale" Franciacorta DOCG brut]()
“Cuvée Imperiale” Franciacorta DOCG brut
In 1961, Guido Berlucchi and the young Oenologist Franco Ziliani made history: the very first Franciacorta was produced in Borgonato di Corte Franca. This pioneering spirit grew into an institution, and in 2022 Gambero Rosso named the house ‘Winery of the Year’. The Cuvée Imperiale blends Chardonnay (90%) and Pinot Nero (10%) from the finest vineyards across all 19 Franciacorta municipalities. Gentle pressing, fermentation in stainless steel, followed by blending in the spring with 10% reserve wines from the finest vintages. The wine matures on the lees for at least 18 months, followed by a further two months after disgorgement.

!["Giatl" Pinot Grigio Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2023]()
“Giatl” Pinot Grigio Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2023
In the local dialect, ‘Giatl’ means ‘small plot of land’ – and this name is steeped in history. The ten-hectare single vineyard in the valley floor of Kurtinig a.d.W. is one of the most exceptional terroirs for Pinot Grigio in the South Tyrolean Unterland. On sandy alluvial soils with calcareous gravel, vines grafted onto low-vigor rootstocks thrive here under ideal conditions, trained using the Guyot system. The unique microclimate of this sun-drenched spot is shaped by two contrasting wind systems: the warm ‘Ora’ blows northwards from Lake Garda in the afternoons, tempering the daytime heat, whilst at night cool downdrafts from the Dolomites provide relief. These extreme temperature fluctuations allow for long, slow ripening phases whilst perfectly preserving acidity and concentrating the aromas. Following hand-harvesting and destemming, a short cold maceration takes place to emphasise the fruitiness. The gently pressed grapes are clarified by natural sedimentation before alcoholic fermentation takes place in small and large French oak barrels (12 months) and in stainless steel tanks (6 months). Yeast ageing lends the wine valuable complexity and depth, whilst further months of bottle ageing round off its profile.

The Decanter World Wine Awards are not just another competition. They are a barometer of the global wine world. For the 23rd time, leading international experts gathered in London to distil what really matters this year: authenticity, craftsmanship and provenance. With just under 17,000 entries from 58 countries, the DWWA 2026 once again sets the standard for everything that goes into recognising, evaluating and classifying great wines.
A judgement that matters
245 judges from 35 countries, including 24 Master Sommeliers and 63 Masters of Wine, carry out blind tastings. No labels, no market logic, no deference to big names. Just the glass, the nose, the palate and the trained judgement of people who have dedicated their professional lives to the language of wine. Wines are assessed using the internationally recognised 100-point system, calibrated by decades of collective experience and underpinned by discussions which, according to Co-Chair Andrew Jefford, were "more lively than ever" this year.
The result is, accordingly, highly selective. Only a small proportion of the wines entered achieve the highest ratings. Those who receive an award here have proven themselves in one of the strictest and most transparent judging processes in the wine world, against international competition and before the industry’s most discerning palates.
The flagship of international wine journalism
Behind the DWWA stands Decanter, the British trade magazine that has been published since 1975 and which, more than almost any other, epitomises independent, broodingand internationally connected wine journalism. For decades, some of the wine world’s most prominent voices have written, reviewed and shaped debates here. Today, Decanter brings together a network of experienced writers, tasters and regional specialists that goes far beyond mere score-based evaluations. It is precisely this that gives the DWWA its particular authority: journalistic depth, an international perspective and an eye that not only recognises but can also contextualise origin, craftsmanship and style.
Italy: Endless variety of styles, uncompromising quality
Italy will continue to be one of the defining nations of the competition in 2026. The award-winning wines showcase a country whose strengths do not stem from a single style, but from the full breadth of its origins: great classics from Tuscany and Piedmont, characterful wines from the south, precise white wines from cooler regions, and distinctive interpretations of indigenous grape varieties. It is precisely this diversity that makes Italy so fascinating. It is not about a single school of thought, but about many voices which, together, paint an exceptionally clear picture of quality.
