A wine like an ecosystem: Misto Mare is no ordinary white wine, but a polyphonic ode to nature from the Alois Lageder winery. The blend combines grapes from over 14 white and red grape varieties grown in organically or biodynamically managed vineyards that are currently in the process of transitioning to organic certification. The grapes come from a wide range of altitudes across South Tyrol – a reflection of the region's diversity, captured in a single wine. The name draws on the region's geological past: around 200 million years ago, South Tyrol was covered by a primeval sea. Today, vines grow on what was once the seabed, their complexity evoking the former depths and the intricate balance of marine ecosystems.

It was precisely this balance that inspired the label – designed by the Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi, who brings together the ocean, the earth and the cosmos in a surreal, poetic tableau. At the centre: a whale leaping through a world in which the Dolomites, coral reefs and Baroque wallpaper motifs merge into a visionary narrative. It is an invitation to transcend boundaries – not only visually, but also in terms of taste.

In the glass, it is straw-yellow with silvery highlights. The nose opens with cool, herbaceous and salty notes, followed by a medley of citrus zest, ripe pear, white flowers, a hint of ginger, a touch of stone fruit and a hint of yeast. On the palate, it is balanced and multi-layered, with fresh acidity, a light touch of tannin, subtle spice and an inviting drinkability. The finish is juicy, mineral and tinged with a delicate hint of bitterness. Misto Mare is a multi-layered white wine with a distinctive style – built less on varietal typicity than on terroir, sustainability and the idea of harmony. A wine that defies categorisation, speaking its own language: lively, organic, ever-changing. And entirely in the spirit of a winery that has been pioneering biodynamic viticulture for decades.
