In the rolling hills of Mezzane di Sotto, where the Monti Garbi rise majestically above the eastern Valpolicella, lies the heart of Tenuta Sant'Antonio: Campo dei Gigli – the field of lilies. Here, on white, calcareous soils with sandy-clayey inclusions at an altitude of 300 metres, lie the oldest vines belonging to brothers Armando, Tiziano, Paolo and Massimo Castagnedi. A single vineyard from which a unique wine is produced. Since 1989, the Castagnedi family has embodied the revolution that changed Valpolicella forever: quality over quantity, whilst everyone else was still focusing on mass production. Forty-year-old vines, trained using the traditional Veronese pergola system with just 3,300 vines per hectare, yield a cuvée comprising 70% Corvina and Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, and 5% each of Croatina and the rare Oseleta. The appassimento – the mystical drying period lasting at least three months – transforms the hand-picked grapes into a concentrated essence.

The 2018 vintage displays an impenetrable ruby red colour with purple highlights and a garnet hue from its oak ageing. A wild, fruity bouquet with balsamic notes, along with aromas of liquorice, black pepper, tobacco, spices and chocolate, unfolds in the glass. Powerful and well-balanced on the palate, with velvety tannins and impressive length – an Amarone that reveals its true potential at least five years after harvest. "Intriguing flecks of musk and mushroom color the deep vein of dried red and black fruit on the nose and this tandem of fruit and savory notes is played out also on the palate, which is full-bodied with very fine tannins that have started to sink into the wine. It emerges from the glass with dusty notes of dried roses, balsamic spices, tobacco, dark chocolate and dried black cherries. Seamlessly and elegantly, it coats the palate with ripe red and blue fruits, which take on a bitter hint of mocha and espresso towards the finish.
