Brunello di Montalcino has been produced at the Argiano estate since 1888. This means that this estate has been there from the very beginning, when this grape variety, this place and this name began to write one of Italy's greatest wine stories. More than a century in a single location, guided by a single conviction: "Il Brunello è l'anima di Argiano – elegance, finesse and identity." Sant'Angelo in Colle lies in south-western Montalcino, the warmest and most distinctly Mediterranean part of the appellation. The soils consist of marl, ancient clays and limestone in high concentration – compact and mineral-rich – a site that lends the Sangiovese a depth quite different from that of the soils to the north. Organic cultivation, limited yields, vines between 15 and 60 years old.
2021 got off to a good start but then became difficult. A mild winter, early budbreak in March, followed by an unexpected April frost. This was followed by a hot summer with severe drought. The vines demonstrated what organically farmed soils are capable of: remarkable resilience, active physiology driven by the drought, and precise, even ripening, aided by significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. Harvest in mid-September: concentrated, fragrant, impeccably healthy grapes. In the cellar, four days of cold maceration, followed by three weeks of fermentation in steel and concrete tanks at below 26°C, with malolactic fermentation taking place in concrete. This is followed by 30 months' ageing in Slavonian and French oak barrels of various sizes ranging from 10 to 50 hectolitres, with each plot aged separately. The blend is only created at the end of the oak ageing process – a commitment to expressing the character of each individual vineyard. Then concrete, followed by long bottle ageing. Bottled according to the most favourable lunar phases.
A fresh, complex bouquet: fruit, balsamic notes, citrus. Silky on the palate, with firm, elegant tannins. Wonderfully balanced, with a subtle salty minerality that lends the wine vibrancy and gastronomic appeal: open and enjoy now, or happily wait another 10 years. The soul of Argiano – since 1888. "The multi-faceted bouquet, with its fresh fruit aromas and spicy notes, is captivating; on the palate it is juicy, with characterful tannins and fresh acidity in perfect balance right through to final long final. Always a safe bet." Vinum
"A sparkling, intense ruby colour with a slightly lighter rim. A very clear and inviting nose, with aromas of fresh dark cherries – very pronounced – along with blackberry and a hint of cloves. Hearty, robust tannins, still a little rough around the edges, but with a juicy core and great structure." Falstaff
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino impresses with its consistency and velvety texture, with notes of blackberry and blackcurrant. It has good freshness and is rather light on the palate." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of cherries, orange blossom and white cedar, with a hint of juniper, give way to a medium-bodied wine with firm, silky tannins and a lively, elegant finish. Linear and taut. Good length. Juicy and full-bodied with a crisp finish. Made from organically grown grapes." James Suckling
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and intense, with a smouldering bouquet of ashy stones, grilled herbs and dried black cherries. It is surprisingly energetic and lively on the palate, with zesty red berry fruit and rosy, floral notes that create a truly satisfying experience. The 2021 vintage is pleasantly full-bodied and long-lasting, leaving a finish with fine-grained tannins and a hint of tart blackberry." Vinous
"This wine is dense and full of aromas of cherry, raspberry, earth, iron and tobacco. A broad foundation of robust tannins provides structure, whilst the lively acidity underpins the long finish with notes of red fruit. All the elements are there; this wine just needs a little more time." Wine Spectator
