In 1975, Altesino pressed the grapes from the Montosoli vineyard separately for the first time – fermented them separately, stored them separately and bottled them separately. It was not a technical coincidence, but a conviction: that this hill north-east of Montalcino, these five hectares at 350 to 400 metres, wanted to say something that an assemblage could not express. It was the first cru in the history of Brunello. Wine Spectator later named Montosoli Italy's second most important vineyard. What characterises the soil is its composition of calcareous marl and silica-rich limestone from the Alberese period – an old, barren, mineral soil that demands a complexity and elegance from the Sangiovese Grosso that is not found in richer soils. In addition, the north-east exposure guarantees cooler temperatures and slower ripening. Montosoli is only bottled as a single vineyard in the best years. 2021 was such a year. After hand-picking, fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by ageing that uses time as a tool: at least two years in large Slavonian oak barrels, three to four months in medium-roasted Allier barriques and a further four months in the bottle. The Montosoli is only ready after around four years.

Deep ruby red colour that turns garnet with age. Dark cherry, blackberry, raspberry, violet, liquorice, vanilla and a fine hint of pink pepper on the nose – complex, multi-layered, with great stillness.
