Andrea Franchetti loved Merlot – and Palazzi is his purest homage to this grape variety. From the estate's higher vineyards, from five to seven hectares of old Merlot vines, one of the greatest Italian Merlots ever is produced year after year: opulent and mineral at the same time, powerful and yet silky smooth. The name refers to the historic "Strada Vecchia" vineyard area, where dense clay soils give the wine its characteristic richness. Eight months in new French barriques, followed by eleven months in concrete tanks – a vinification that lends the wine complexity without disguising its natural opulence.

Palazzi shows Merlot at its best: The nose opens with dark berries – blackberry, blackcurrant, ripe plum –floral notes reminiscent of spring blossom when the plum trees bear their white flowers in March. Sweet tobacco, dark chocolate, a hint of liquorice and spicy leather. The 2023 vintage brings maturity and intensity without lapsing into heaviness – the early harvest in mid-September captures the perfect balance between concentration and freshness. All the magic of this wine unfolds on the palate: velvety texture, full-bodied structure, a richness that completely fills the mouth and then leads into the earthy, almost brutal depth that makes Palazzi so unique. The tannins are present but of refined finesse, the final long, savoury and with that salty minerality that comes from the higher vineyards.
