Andrea Franchetti loved Merlot – and Palazzi is his ultimate tribute to this grape variety. Year after year, the higher-altitude plots of the estate – comprising five to seven hectares of old Merlot vines – produce one of the finest Italian Merlots of all: opulent yet mineral, powerful yet silky smooth. The name refers to the historic "Strada Vecchia" vineyard, where dense clay soils lend the wine its characteristic richness. Eight months in new French barriques, followed by eleven months in concrete tanks – a vinification process that lends the wine complexity without masking its natural opulence.

Palazzi showcases Merlot at its very best: The nose opens with dark berries – blackberry, blackcurrant, ripe plum – accompanied by floral notes reminiscent of spring blossoms, when the plum trees are in full white bloom in March. Sweet tobacco, dark chocolate, a hint of liquorice and spicy leather. The 2023 vintage brings ripeness and intensity without becoming heavy – the early harvest in mid-September captures the perfect balance between concentration and freshness. On the palate, the full magic of this wine unfolds: a velvety texture, a full-bodied structure, a richness that completely fills the mouth and then flows into that earthy, almost brutal depth that makes Palazzi so unique. The tannins are present but of refined delicacy; the final is long, spicy and characterised by that salty minerality derived from the higher vineyards. A wine of intensity and charm, which is approachable even when young but has the potential to age for decades.
