Sergio Manetti, a steel entrepreneur from Florence, bottled his first wine in 1971 – a Chianti Classico from the two hectares of vines he had planted around his holiday home. A wine for friends and business associates, nothing more. He sent a few bottles to Verona for the major wine fair Vinitaly, more out of curiosity than ambition. The reaction was overwhelming. The hobby became a passion, and the passion a vocation. Until 1981, this wine bore the name ‘Chianti Classico Montevertine Riserva’. Then came the turning point. Sergio Manetti refused to blend white Trebbiano into his Sangiovese, as required by the Chianti Classico regulations. The decision cost him the DOCG – and made him a legend. From 1982, the wine was simply called “Montevertine”, without any additions, without compromise. A name that became a statement: Sangiovese in its purest, most traditional form, just as the old Chianti farmers would have pressed it before bureaucracy and commercialism dictated the rules. The wine comes mainly from a two-and-a-half-hectare plot facing south-southeast, planted in 1982 – in the year of the great upheaval.

A brilliant ruby red with purple highlights. The bouquet is one of elegant clarity: polished aromas of sour cherry, bergamot and liquorice, with hints of leather, rose petals and thyme. Medium-bodied on the palate, with silky, perfectly integrated tannins, lively acidity and final long, spicy final. A wine of classic beauty – robust yet full of finesse, Tuscan to the core. This is Montevertine’s firstborn, the wine that bears the house’s name. Between the fresh Pian del Ciampolo and the monumental Le Pergole Torte, it plays in a league where elegance is more important than power, where authenticity counts for more than perfection. It is made from 90% Sangiovese, with smaller proportions of Canaiolo and Colorino, and is initially aged in concrete tanks before maturing in large barrels. The winemaking is straightforward, traditional and restrained. Compared to the Pian del Ciampolo, however, the intensity is significantly higher. This wine shows additional maturity and more of those Tuscan, sun-kissed aromas of dark fruits and plums. It also has more body and complexity, which is typical of this lush vintage.
