In 1977, Sergio Manetti produced his first pure Sangiovese from Radda in Chianti – without Canaiolo, without Colorino, without the white grapes that the Chianti regulations prescribed at the time. Not because he wanted to break the rules, but because he believed that this soil, these vines, this single grape variety needed no additions. From the very beginning, the wine was called Toscana IGT, not out of defiance, but out of consistency. And it bore a name rooted in the landscape itself: Le Pergole Torte – the twisted, winding pergolas of old Chianti, those wooden trellis systems up which the vines of our grandfathers’ generation climbed. A reminder of what was, before modernity straightened out the vineyards.
The label features a painting by the artist Alberto Manfredi: a sleeping woman beneath a pergola, lost in reverie, resting in the shade of the vines. Sergio Manetti loved Manfredi’s work and had it printed on the wine – an industrialist who granted a painter immortality. Every year, Martino Manetti selects a different painting from the artist’s legacy. The sleeping woman remains the soul of the label. The historic plots were planted between 1968 and 1999 – on galestro and limestone, on the hills of Radda, the coolest part of Chianti Classico. 100% Sangiovese, carefully selected. Fermentation for 20 days in concrete tanks – no steel, no influence of wood at this stage, just the Sangiovese and its own nature. Malolactic fermentation also in concrete. Then a year in Allier barriques from France, which give the wine texture and subtle spice. Then a further year in large Slavonian oak casks, which establish the structure without overpowering it. Two years in wood, two materials, one voice.
In Radda, 2023 was a year marked by significant temperature fluctuations and a long, steady ripening period – for a Sangiovese that prioritises freshness and precision over opulence, creating ideal conditions. A luminous, deep ruby red. On the nose, black cherry, forest floor, black truffle, bark, fresh earth and pine needles – of a purity and concentration that deserves the term ‘essence’. On the palate, medium-bodied and of exceptional depth, the tannins lively and impeccably integrated, the freshness an invisible backbone, the finish long, mineral, endless. Le Pergole Torte – not the most powerful wine in Italy every year, but perhaps the truest. SUPERIORE.DE
