On 29 June 1921, Sergio Manetti was born, the man who would change the world of wine fifty years later. One hundred years later, in October 2021, Martino Manetti and his team climbed into the historic vineyards of – montevertine Vecchia and Le Pergole Torte – to harvest the very best Sangiovese grapes. For a wine that could only be dedicated to one person: Sergio. The father, the visionary, the man who bought a holiday home in 1967 and turned it into a legend. Sergio did it twice before: in 1989 and 1991 he created wines that bore his name – the ultimate selection, the best of the best. His son Martino took up this tradition to honour his father's centenary. On 24 September 2024, exactly one thousand magnums were bottled, each one numbered, each one unique. The label shows a linocut work by Alberto Manfredi: two faces, Sergio and a woman, united in profile – art and memory, forever linked.

The grapes come from the estate's oldest plots, planted in 1968 and 1982, the years that marked Montevertine's rise to fame. Pure Sangiovese, meticulously selected, vinified according to the traditional method in concrete over twenty-five days. However, the ageing follows a different path than Le Pergole Torte: this wine matured for twenty-four months exclusively in a single large Slavonian oak barrel – sixteen hectolitres capacity. No French barriques, no compromises. Just wood, time and Sangiovese. Just as Sergio once wanted, when maturity was still difficult to achieve in Radda and French oak helped to give texture. Today, in warmer times, the question arises: does great Sangiovese still need barrique? This wine provides the answer.

Deep, intense ruby red colour. The bouquet unfolds a complexity that leaves you breathless: macerated cherry, plum, mocha, fresh leather, incense, cedar wood, dried flowers. On the palate, concentration, freshness and structure in a balance that is rarely experienced – even with Montevertine. Velvety tannins, vibrant acidity, endless length. A Sangiovese of monumental power and aristocratic elegance at the same time. "Il Duemilaventuno di Sergio Manetti" is more than just wine. It is a memory in liquid form, a memorial to a man who dedicated his life to Sangiovese.
