Monika Bär-Bettschart spent her holidays in Castellina as a young girl. She fell in love with this piece of Tuscany – and later with Thomas. After their marriage, the two acquired Gagliole. A Swiss couple, a Tuscan Podere, a very simple conviction: If you really love a piece of land, you have to farm it. La Valletta in Panzano has also been part of the family since 2011 – ten hectares on the north-western edge of the Conca d'Oro, at 450 to 500 metres, exposed to the south-west, on Pietraforte: that compact, limestone-rich sandstone that does not yield to Sangiovese – and therefore demands the best from it.

The Gagliole Rosso – the first wine ever produced by the estate, born in 1993 – comes exclusively from these vineyards. 100% Sangiovese, organic, hand-picked, fermentation with indigenous yeasts in conical oak vats and steel, 30 days of maceration. Then a complex, staggered ageing process: at least twelve months in French barriques (30% new), a further ten months in 12-hectolitre barrels, three months of elevage in cement tanks. No intervention that does not serve the wine.

2021 was a year of extraordinary radiance in Panzano. Intense ruby red colour, bright and deep. Lush cherry, blood oranje, spices, menthol, rose blossom on the nose – complex, layered, with an energy that the Parker reviewer described in one word: explosive. Full-bodied and precise at the same time on the palate, with velvety tannins, invigorating acidity and a very long, mineral final. A Sangiovese that clearly shows what Panzano can do. SUPERIORE.DE

"Made with organic Sangiovese grapes grown in Panzano on a mix of pietraforte soils and clay, the 2021 Gagliole shows perfumed intensity with a combination of cherry, forest berry and wild violet or mountain flower. There is an earthy component that is very clean in nature and recalls garden soil with fresh organic matter. That note transforms into a pristine mineral note of crushed rock as the wine opens carefully in the glass.
