L'Apparita – "The apparition". From the highest point of this special vineyard, the tower of Siena's Palazzo Pubblico appears in the distance, hovering like a mirage between heaven and earth. It was this magical sight that gave the vineyard its name and gave Tuscany's first 100% Merlot its mysterious soul. High up in the Bellavista Valley, at 490 metres above sea level, two small plots of 3.84 hectares of vines are enthroned. Here, where Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca still grew in 1975, the Merlot vines of clone 342 now stretch out in a perfect north-south orientation. The soil – predominantly clay on calcareous subsoil – and the revolutionary lyre training system create a microclimate that makes this cru a crown jewel of world wine production.

2021 is a vintage in Tuscany that is already being described as historic. In this extraordinary year, all the forces of nature came together in a perfect crescendo. The warm conditions gave the grapes an unprecedented concentration, while the cool nights preserved the elegance that has always characterised L'Apparita. It is a vintage that embodies all the great characteristics of this legendary vintage.

The 2021 L'Apparita has a tinty-dark, almost black appearance – a visual promise of its immense depth. The bouquet unfolds like a sensual mystery: dark fruits, espresso, liquorice, lavender and jagged rocks merge into a composition of beguiling inner perfume and exotic richness. Walnuts, iodine and a hint of sea shells lend the aroma a complex minerality that bears witness to the unique location. The palate reveals all the grandeur of this exceptional vintage: a monumental, statuesque wine with a compact, seamless tannin structure. The balance between richness and freshness is perfect, supported by a full body that embodies both power and finesse.
