Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta is said to have once said that Sassicaia is always great in years with an eight at the end: 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008. The sentence sounds like a legend – but it holds water. 2008 was a year of transition: spring began cool, the vegetation was delayed by ten days, the summer gradually warmed up and led to a concentrated, structurally rich harvest. It was also the first year in which the new oenological team worked together with the legendary Giacomo Tachis – a baton that was passed in slow motion.
Dark red ruby garnet colour. Cassis, violets, mint and graphite on the nose – dense, precise, still full of youthful tension. Full-bodied on the palate, with a silky texture, fine, ripe tannins and a long, spicy final that echoes cedar wood and liquorice. A Sassicaia in its best maturity phase – and in the 1.5-litre Liters bottle, which gives the wine more time than it needs. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, rich ruby colour. Intense and finely characterised nose, aromas of redcurrants, wild raspberries and macchia herbs, some olive paste. Superb on the palate, shows plenty of sparkling acidity, lively and brooding, builds beautifully, very compact, lots of accessible fruit, plus fine-meshed, well-ripened tannins, tobacco flavours on the final, skilfully combines power and elegance." Falstaff
"Really first-class stuff. Great balance. Very mature and sophisticated. Very dry and restrained and different from most." James Suckling
"It is refined and elegant, in keeping with the restraint of the vintage. Blackberry, plum, cassis and mineral flavours play with subtle oak spice notes on the finish, where it flexes its muscles." Wine Spectator
"The 2008 Sassicaia is a rich, broodingwine that shows remarkable class with its black cherries, plums, grilled herbs, minerals and smoke. The 2008 is a decidedly closed, firm Sassicaia that, unlike the 2006 and 2007 wines, both of which were much more obvious, is currently holding back much of its potential. harvestwho can afford to wait will be treated to a great wine once it has settled in the bottle. Muscular, firm tannins frame the exquisite finish of this dark, imposing Sassicaia." Wine Advocate
"This is the best young Sassicaia in years. It's the new 1988 - which was great, sometimes better than the legendary 1985. What incredible flavours here with blueberries, spices, liquorice, plums. Graphite too. Subtle and complex. Full and silky with a beautiful texture of fine tannins and an ultra-fine finish. So beautiful now, but it will be even better in 2015." James Suckling
"Recent changes made by the winemaker and winery make this one of the best Sassicaias ever. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc offers high concentration and sun-drenched flavours of black fruits, plums, dried bay leaves, black olives and tobacco. The dense, fertile soils that characterise the magical coastal strip of Tuscany near Bolgheri contribute to an astonishing richness and intensity." Wine Enthusiast
"Dense, intense colour of chocolate and plum. Despite its age, it is still very closed on the nose. The palate heads towards a split where the tertiary aromas and flavours emerge, although they are held back by the primary, vibrant blackberry fruit and a touch of Sassicaia freshness with a hint of liquorice root. After a while in the glass, the nose begins to open up. Notes of undergrowth are most evident, followed by black truffles. This wine opens slowly and needs time and patience. Clearly a great vintage that still has many years ahead of it." Decanter
