    In 1898, Christian Schrott, parish priest of Termeno and a member of the Austrian Parliament, founded a cooperative intended to bring together the winegrowers of his village. What began back then as a community based on farmers’ solidarity is now one of South Tyrol’s most renowned wine-growers’ cooperatives: 160 member families, 250 hectares of vineyards, and a commitment to quality that is unrivalled in the region. The name ‘Stoan’ is the brainchild of cellar master Willi Stürz – and is self-explanatory: ‘Stoan’ is the dialect word for ‘stone’, and the stony, limestone-rich subsoil at altitudes of up to 600 metres is what gives this wine its identity.

    The Stoan cuvée brings together the estate’s finest white wine grapes: 65% Chardonnay for body and texture, 20% Sauvignon Blanc for aromatic freshness and vibrancy, 10% Pinot Blanc for elegance, and 5% Gewürztraminer for its floral bouquet. The vines are up to 40 years old. Hand-harvested at the end of September, slow fermentation at 18 to 20 °C in 30 to 40-hectolitre wooden casks, with partial malolactic fermentation; the must is clarified by natural sedimentation. Aged for 11 months on the fine lees in large wooden casks, followed by at least 3 months’ bottle ageing.

    Bright golden yellow. The bouquet is elegant and multi-layered: peach, apricot, pear, elderflower, kumquat, jasmine and mimosa – – this is South Tyrolean aromatics at their most complex. Deep and balanced on the palate, underpinned by pineapple, banana and citrus zest, with subtle minerality and a long, creamy final. Four varieties, one character – and always that stone at its core.
