Basarin is the latest chapter in the Sottimano story – acquired in 2014, the fifth cru to complete the portfolio. And also the most complex. The small MGA Basarin extends over a heterogeneous terrain with a pronounced slope and considerable altitude – a terrain that appears almost rugged in comparison to the gentle hills of other Neive sites. The soils are of Miocene-Helvetian origin, predominantly calcareous, interspersed with sandy veins – a composition that allows for both mineral tension and aromatic depth. The vines here are heterogeneous in age and exposure, which places additional demands on the vinification: even more precise selection, even more precise harvest harvestthe harvest. Then the consistent Sottimano method: natural yeast fermentation, long maceration, spontaneous malolactic, 18 to 22 months in specially made barriques, one year in the bottle. No filtration. No fining.
Intense ruby red colour. Balsamic depth on the nose, spices, ripe red fruit, discreet but persistent minerality – more multi-layered than the others, carried by a natural tension and precision. Richly structured on the palate, with great complexity, fine tannins and a lingering finish of herbs and light-coloured stone. Basarin – the youngest chapter and the deepest expression. SUPERIORE.DE
"A spicy wine with graphite, licorice root, strawberries, red cherries and leather. Juicy and toasty on the medium-bodied palate, showing very fresh acidity and well-handled, velvety tannins." James Suckling
"The 2023 Barbaresco Basarin is deep, resonant and super-expressive. Expansive contours wrap around a core of blue/purplish fruit. Lavender, menthol, espresso and spicebox all meld together in the glass, with floral top notes that add finesse. This sensual, layered Barbaresco is a total delight. It is the most approachable for the 2023 Barbarescos at this address." Vinous
"Red berries playing between fresh and candied sweet while flowers and spices paint a picture of pure Basarin beauty. The palate brings that same thoughtful depth, where juicy fruit meets structure in a way that makes you understand why some vineyards earn their reputation. This is what happens when everything, place, producer and vintage line up perfectly." Wine Enthusiast
"After sitting out the 2022 vintage, Sottimano is back with the full gamut of its five MGA bottlings. They saw a full two-month submerged-cap maceration – a gentle extraction to encourage elegance – and spent slightly less time in wood than usual. The Basarin whispers a promising mix of rose, cedar and sweet herbs. Taut and tight, the palate is currently focused on structure rather than flesh. It's relatively dense but not rich, and leaves a lasting saline impression. I suspect further ageing will turn up the volume and calibrate its intrinsic components." Decanter
