Sand changes everything. In Neive, where many Barbaresco soils are dominated by marl and clay, the Fausoni vineyard is interspersed with sandy components – and this difference is no mere detail. Sand conducts heat differently, drains more quickly, contains fewer nutrients and forces the vine to concentrate its flavours. At the same time, it lends the tannins a finesse that does not develop in heavier soils. Forty-year-old vines growing in this light subsoil have learnt to grow deep and slender. The result is the softest, most floral of the five Sottimano Barbareschi. Fermentation with natural yeasts, prolonged contact with the cap, natural malolactic fermentation. 18 to 22 months in barriques specially made for the estate, half of which is spent on the lees. Like all five crus: no filtration, no fining, and a further year of bottle ageing. The same care – and a completely different result.
A clear, bright ruby red. On the nose, rose petals, fresh red fruits, mint, liquorice and delicate floral notes – open, inviting and highly elegant. On the palate, a striking interplay: soft tannins, a firm core of lively acidity, long-lasting and accompanied by aromatic herbs. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Barbaresco Fausoni 2023 is delicate and floral on first impression, before the mid-palate gradually begins to open up. Red cherry, blood orange, mint, white pepper, slate and dried herbs unfold in the glass. The 2023 is medium-bodied with lovely length and offers plenty of potential." Vinous
"The Fausoni shows deeper color and greater concentration than its siblings. Rather than the pronounced floral character found in Cottà, this wine emphasizes generous aromas of cherry and blackcurrant, with hints of crushed stone and granite that lend focus and definition. It carries its extra richness with grace, balancing fruit intensity with freshness and structure. Overall, this is the most powerful wine of the lineup so far, with the concentration and framework to reward extended cellaring." Wine Advocate
