Between the big names of the La Morra crus – cerequio to the west, Fossati to the north – lies La Serra, a location that is often underestimated and therefore fascinating. While Brunate impresses with its geological force, La Serra plays a more subtle game: poorer, stony soils force the Nebbiolo roots down to a depth of ten metres. What sounds like a tough battle actually gives the wine an unconventional elegance – fresh, spacious, precise. Roberto Voerzio cultivates his parcel with the same radicalism as in all his crus: extreme planting density, rigorous yield reduction, spontaneous fermentation without any intervention. But what comes out of this vineyard is clearly different from the virile intensity of Brunate.
La Serra develops flavours of red berries – raspberry and redcurrant in the foreground –accompanied by juicy orange peel, aniseed, summer flowers and a subtle note of leather. A vibrant energy unfolds on the palate: linear structure, silky tannins, lively acidity. Not a colossus, but a runner – usain Bolt from the starting blocks, as one critic aptly put it. The 2021 shows the typical La Serra characteristics: power that never becomes heavy, concentration that remains airy. The 24-month maturation in used barriques and large barrels has lent the wine complexity without overpowering its youthful freshness. A fine minerality remains on the final, reminiscent of road dust and tobacco – a wine that does not aim to impress, but to seduce. La Serra requires less patience than Brunate, but rewards those who give it time to develop its multi-layered nuances. A Barolo for those who value elegance over power. SUPERIORE.DE
"Promising aromas of maraschino cherries, herbs, undergrowth and white pepper; a multi-layered yet delicate Barolo with a precise acid-tannin structure and plenty of minerality, the final is extremely polished and long." Vinum
"A spicy and powerful wine. Amazing complexity in the dark and multi-layered nose. Notes of plum, incense, potpourri and cherry jelly are supported by chewy, dusty tannins, a full body and refreshing acidity. The finish is taut and biting, but is balanced by a supple concentration of fruit. A very youthful and voluptuous Barolo." James Suckling
"A spearmint-driven, sagebrush-layered wine, scented with cherry fruit and enriched by mahogany wood, pine forest, tar and tobacco notes. It offers medium-bodied richness of fruit and spice, all wrapped in a dynamic, brooding frame. This is a wine intent on retreating before it reveals its brilliance – suggest popping corks well after 2027." Decanter
