Cannubi. Three syllables that sound like a hymn in the world of Barolo. The most famous vineyard in the Langhe, the heart of the municipality of Barolo, the undisputed king of the crus – so say the insiders. Almost 100% white clay, gently rolling hills between Barolo, La Morra and Novello. A vineyard that lacks the masculine power of Serralunga or Castiglione, but instead showcases the finer, more Burgundian side of Nebbiolo: red fruit, finesse, harmony. Here, where Sandrone and Scavino also produce their finest wines, Silvia Altare has been cultivating a mere 0.25 hectares since 2011 – two leased plots that yield just four barriques. Fewer than 1,500 bottles a year. A privilege reserved for the few.

The lease agreement? That's a story in itself. The costs are so astronomical that the price of the wine can barely cover them. Yet for Silvia, the boost to her prestige and her passion carry more weight than financial prudence. Only recently did the project face collapse: the lease was due to expire, and there was great uncertainty. Then, at the last minute, came the relief – ten more years of Cannubi. Albeit at an even higher price. What makes this wine so special? Vines around 30 years old, growing on marl with clay and sand, facing south. Four to five days' maceration in rotary fermenters, followed by 24 months' ageing in French barriques (one new, three used).

A bright ruby red with garnet highlights in the glass. The nose is explosive: juicy, dense, ripe red cherry, cherry liqueur, delicate herbs, mint, stinging nettles, violet liqueur, white pepper and subtle brown spices. On the palate, it is multi-layered and powerfully driven, always centred on red fruit. The tannins are firm and finely structured, coating the tongue – bringing with them an endless array of red cherries and fragrant red blossoms. A finish lasting several minutes, featuring cherries, spices and a great deal of elegance. A Cannubi that needs a few more years in the cellar than the Arborina to integrate its abundant tannins.
