The Vigna Ped vineyard is a project spanning generations: its oldest vines have been growing there since 1950, 32 years before Conterno Fantino was founded. Today, the children are involved in the business – Noemi and Matteo Conterno, Elisa and Fabio Fantino – meaning that the vines from 1950 are now in their second generation. All the estate’s vineyards are situated in Monforte d’Alba, where, as the estate puts it, the soil is everything. However, it was not until 2004 that the old vines produced their own wine: a Barolo from the Mosconi vineyard, south-facing and situated at an altitude of 380 to 410 metres, complemented by vines planted in 2000 and 2007.

The subsoil consists of Sant'Agata marl, interspersed with sandy fossils; above this lies light-coloured, calcareous silt mixed with sand, and the slope has a gradient of 30 per cent. There are 4,500 to 5,000 vines per hectare, pruned using the Guyot method, with a yield of 55 to 60 double centners. Around mid-October, the grapes are harvested by hand; fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation in oak, and the wine is matured in French oak barrels of various sizes. That is all it takes to produce the approximately 6,000 bottles that result.

Dark cherry, rose and tea leaf, accompanied by wild raspberry, blood orange, leather, tobacco and liquorice, with a mineral undertone. Taut and powerful on the palate, with chalky, firm tannins; the fruit is dense and dark, and the finish is tart and long. As it breathes, floral notes emerge, yet the structure remains the dominant feature. It is still holding back. This wine demands patience, and with vines dating back to 1950, it is well within its rights to do so. SUPERIORE.DE
