There are wines that are more than just wines – they are statements. When Luigi Moio created his Grande Cuvée after twenty years of tireless work in the vineyards of Irpinia, he produced not only his flagship white wine, but a testament to his philosophy. This exceptional blend of 40% Greco di Tufo, 40% Fiano di Avellino and 20% Falanghina brings together Campania's three great indigenous grape varieties in a composition of rare harmony and complexity. The Greco comes from the finest plot of the Giallo d'Arles vineyard in Tufo, where marl-and-sand soils with a high clay content and valuable limestone deposits, at an altitude of 400 metres, create ideal conditions. The Fiano is selected from the finest plots of the Exultet vineyard in Lapio – here, at an altitude of 600 metres, porous layers of lapilli permeate the clay-rich subsoil, ensuring a constant water supply to the vines. Finally, the Falanghina thrives on the loose, clay-rich soils of the mid-slopes of Mirabella Eclano, where the west-facing aspect ensures optimal ripening conditions.

The winemaking process follows Moio's principle of "controlled complexity": after being hand-picked and placed in 15-kilogram crates, the grapes are gently pressed. 60% of the must ferments in new French barriques, whilst 40% ferments in stainless-steel tanks at 18–20°C – a deliberate division that later contributes to the wine’s unique balance. Eight months' ageing sur lie, followed by two years' bottle ageing before release, complete this oenological masterpiece.

The 2023 Grande Cuvée is a brilliant golden-yellow wine with greenish highlights. The bouquet reveals the full complexity of this unique blend: exotic fruits blend with floral notes from all three grape varieties, whilst mineral and almost iodine-like nuances reflect the volcanic origins of the soils. On the palate, the wine unfolds with exceptional depth and structure: the powerful minerality of the Greco harmonises perfectly with the elegant fruitiness of the Fiano and the Mediterranean freshness of the Falanghina. The final is of impressive length – a lingering echo of the Campanian terroirs, perfectly expressing Luigi Moio's vision of a great white cuvée. SUPERIORE.DE
