There are wines that are more than just wines – they are confessions. When Luigi Moio created his Grande Cuvée after twenty years of tireless labour in the vineyards of Irpinia, he not only created his white flagship, but also a testament to his philosophy. This exceptional blend of 40% Greco di Tufo, 40% Fiano di Avellino and 20% Falanghina unites the three great indigenous grape varieties of Campania in a composition of rare harmony and complexity. The Greco comes from the most splendid parcel of the Giallo d'Arles vineyard in Tufo, where marnoso-arenary soils with a high clay content and valuable limestone deposits create ideal conditions at an altitude of 400 metres. The Fiano is selected from the best sites of the Exultet vineyard in Lapio – here, at an altitude of 600 metres, porous lapilli layers permeate the clayey subsoil and ensure a constant water supply for the vines. Finally, the Falanghina thrives on the loose, clayey soils of the middle slopes of Mirabella Eclano, where the western exposure ensures optimal ripening conditions.

The vinification follows Moio's maxim of controlled complexity: after hand-picking in 15-kilogramme crates, the grapes are gently pressed. 60% of the must ferments in new French barriques, while 40% ferments in stainless steel tanks at 18-20°C – a deliberate division that later contributes to the unique balance of the wine. Eight months of ageing sur lie, followed by two years of bottle ageing before release, complete this oenological masterpiece.

The 2023 Grande Cuvée presents itself as a bright golden yellow wine with greenish reflections. The bouquet reveals the full complexity of this unique blend: exotic fruit blends with floral notes from all three grape varieties, while mineral and almost iodine-like nuances reflect the volcanic origin of the soil. A wine of exceptional depth and structure unfolds on the palate: the powerful minerality of the Greco harmonises perfectly with the elegant fruitiness of the Fiano and the Mediterranean freshness of the Falanghina. The final is of impressive length – a lingering echo of the Campania terroir that perfectly expresses Luigi Moio's vision of a great white cuvée. SUPERIORE.DE
