Fiano di Avellino with a seductive bouquet of white spring flowers, peaches, almonds and a very light smoky note. Round and fresh on the palate of tropical fruits and spices, beautiful minerality on the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Donnachiara 2019 Fiano di Avellino is fragrant and fresh with white flowers, almond blossoms, citrus and acacia honey. This is a pristine and zesty white with good acidity and a snappy, lean-bodied approach. This is a terrific bottle to pair with a classic Caesar salad with croutons, romaine lettuce and a citrusy vinaigrette." Robert Parker

Radici Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2021
Mastroberardino makes a special effort to cultivate the ancient grape variety Fiano. It was already cultivated by the Romans, who called it Vitis apiana because of its special attraction to bees (apis). Fiano Campania IGT 2018
In this wine from Pietracupa, the aromatic grace of Fiano di Avellino is perfectly combined with the mineral power of the Montefredane soils. Citrus notes on the nose, a variety of fruit flavours on the palate, rocky minerality, complexity and an excellent structure beguile the senses. SUPERIORE.DE
"Three versions of Fiano di Avellino here - all powerful, all superb, and all great reprsentations of Fiano. The Pietracupa is the most refined, each wine has notable cellar potential." Forbes Magazine
"This has a very ripe-fruit nose with cooked lemon and clotted cream, following through to a fullish palate, picking up very saline, almost nutty notes that refresh the finish. Feels very young still." James Suckling
"This wine now carries an IGT designation, although I think it was previously part of the Fiano di Avellino appellation. The Pietracupa 2018 Fiano shows a bright golden color with aromas of peach, citrus, ripe pear and a hint of wild sage. To the palate, this is a mid-weight white with the creamy intensity and textural richness to pair with scallops on the half shell with garlic and butter." Robert Parker

“Campanaro” Bianco Irpinia DOC 2018
Campanaro from Fiano and Greco glows in a warm, sunny yellow hue. The bouquet reveals a variety of scents, ripe pear, candied orange peel and fig, followed by honey and hawthorn. The palate presents its rich and round texture as well as a fine pleasant acidity. The underlying mineral content gives the wine fresh highlights and leads to a balanced, wonderful finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"A dense white with layers of fruit, showing cooked apples, pears and hints of almonds. It's full and flavorful with a crushed-stone undertone to the creamy-textured fruit. Needs a little time to open." James Suckling
"A blend of equal parts Fiano and Greco packaged in a softly frosted bottle, the Feudi di San Gregorio 2018 Irpinia Campanaro does a great job of presenting varietal and territorial typicity, also offering a smooth and contemporary personality at the same time. There is enough structure and fruity fiber to contemplate a more sophisticated food pairing such as pasta with black squid ink." Robert Parker

“Stilèma” Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2017
"The Stilèma project was born as a testimony of Antonio Mastroberardino's love for his land, his vines and his wines, for their original character." Piero Mastroberardino
The project aims to highlight the link between the vines, the wines and their territorial origins. In this way, the Mastroberardino family wants to recreate the style of winemaking of the autochthonous grape varieties of Irpinia (Greco, Fiano and Aglianico) that took place between the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1970s of the twentieth century for the Taurasi and between the years 1970 and 1980 for the two white wines from Irpinia. It is the unmistakable style (the stilèma) of a family that has interpreted the natural heritage of its territory over generations and today impressively highlights the true character of the terroir, which by no means can be expressed by high concentration and intensity alone.
Pale straw yellow with light green reflections. The 24 months of yeast ageing of this exceptional Fiano create a fascinating balance and complexity of the aroma profile with classic hints of flint, fine saltiness, the scent of fresh almonds, cedar wood and wild herbs. The taste is lively with a pronounced mineral note, accompanied by an inspiring freshness that gives it great drinkability and finesse. The precise and very long finish is also extremely convincing. SUPERIORE.DE
"Needs a bit of air to bring out the mix of dried-herb and jaffa-cake aromas, which persist on the medium palate, growing in intensity towards the finish, thanks to the addition of bright citrus and mineral tinges." James Suckling
"The 2017 Fiano di Avellino Stilema opens slowly, unwinding with dusty dried flowers, crushed oyster shells and incense giving way to young peaches and hints of exotic spice. This soothes with silken textures and ripe stone fruits, as tension builds through a mix of saline-minerals and lemon oils toward the close, all under an enriching air of crushed hazelnut. A salty flourish and sour citrus linger through the lightly structured finale, as the 2017 Fiano Stilema tapers off with impressive length. As gorgeous as this is today, it will only get better through short-term cellaring. The Fiano Stilema is basically a selection of a selection from Mastroberardino’s best vineyards which, in 2017, only amounted to a total of 3000 bottles in order to maintain the level of quality that the estate expects. The result is one of the most seductive expressions of the varietal that I’ve encountered." Vinous

“Exultet” Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2020
Bright yellow with greenish reflections. Fascinatingly fresh bouquet of white smoke, minerals and peach with a hint of lime. On the palate, the true class and intensity of this Fiano is revealed: Unmatched by many colleagues, a silky philharmonic concert of green apple, lime, yellow flowers and exotic fruits opens up here. Always at the forefront is the fresh acidity, mineral notes and a purity that effortlessly elevates the wine to an exceptional position that is very hard to find in southern Italy. A downright masterful Fiano that can hardly be surpassed in naturalness and class. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very intense on the nose and palate, showing white peaches and savory herbs, such as thyme. Medium-bodied with good drive, persistent fruit and impressive focus at the finish, but it's all relatively short-lived. Very good and perfectly presentable." James Suckling

“Cupo” Fiano Campania IGT 2018
Only in the best years does Sabino Loffredo vinify a tiny portion of his best Fiano grapes from the Cru site in Toppole Montefredane as a single-site white wine. The result is called Cupo, is virtually hand-picked and can hardly be surpassed in purity and minerality. Slender and racy in the glass, it reveals an overwhelming freshness, notes of grapefruit and a subtle saltiness that is otherwise only found in the neighbour Quintodecimo or in the whites from Etna. A real class of its own and we are delighted to have been allowed a small allocation! SUPERIORE.DE
"Talented Sabino Loffredo's wines are identified by a sleek mineral tanginess. This 2018 vintage of his selection 'Cupo' from Montefredane is intense and smoky with Mirabelle plum and an iodine character. The palate is dominated by a Mojito-like flavour of lime and mint, with stone fruit in depth. It displays great refinement of phenolics, with a tight-knit structure and lifted acidity through to the finish. One of the greatest Fiano I have tasted in 2021." Decanter

Fiano is one of the oldest autochthonous white grape varieties in Italy. It is mainly found in the southern Italian region of Campania. Probably cultivated by the Romans, it was widespread and very popular from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. After the phylloxera disaster, international varieties such as Chardonnay or the easily cultivated Trebbiano varieties were preferred in many areas. Autochthonous grape varieties largely died out. So did the Fiano.
In the 1970s a return to the past began and it is thanks to Antonio Mastroberardino that the variety was saved. The Mastroberardino winery invested a lot in research. In cooperation with universities and grape nurseries, other old grape varieties such as Greco di Tufo, Falanghina, Piedirosso, Aglianico or Coda di Volpe have been successfully recultivated over the years. In 1990, there were no more than 500 hectares of Fiano in the whole of Italy, now there are more than three times as many, with a strong upward trend, very pleasing.
The relatively late ripening Fiano grape produces aromatic, spicy white wines with a peach and grape aroma reminiscent of Muscat, often with a delicate honey and nut bouquet. When properly matured, they have a long shelf life. If you happen to have read in Wikipedia that Fiano should be drunk young, please forget that. Mastroberardinos Fianos are still in the barrel for the drinking window indicated there. On the contrary, Fiano from the good growing regions Cilento, Sannio or Avellino only tastes really good after two or three years of bottle ripening in the cellar and remains a fine pleasure and a wonderful universal food companion for a few more years.
Wine journalist Steffen Maus describes Fiano this way: "Aromas of lime blossom, dried fruit, hazelnut, almond and wild fennel are just some of the complex aromas, always accompanied by a wonderful minerality and juiciness on the palate, which invites you to continue drinking. Wonderfully independent and not to be compared with other Italian or French grape varieties."
The most famous growing areas are the DOC Sannio, DOC Cilento and the region around Avellino, which has been upgraded to DOCG since 2003. The Fiano di Avellino is probably the best known. Its vineyards, situated in the heart of Irpinia, reach up to 700 m above sea level, are always well ventilated and particularly fine fruity due to clear temperature differences between day and night.
After new plantations in the last century, Fiano can also be found outside Campania on a small scale in Basilicata, Marche and Sicily, where Planeta has proven what impressive wines can be produced from Fiano. About a handful of producers in Australia are also involved with this variety. SUPERIORE.DE
