It all began with friendship and a love of experimentation: in the mid-1980s, when a group of wine lovers led by photographer Silvia Imparato started their first experiments on the family vineyard in the Campania hinterland. One of these friends was Riccardo Cotarella, now one of Italy's most famous Oenologist. In 1991, the first bottle of a wine was produced that would soon go down in history as the "Sassicaia of the South" – a title that Robert Parker awarded it in 1995 and which still resonates today. The winery is located in the Monti Picentini Regional Park near San Cipriano Picentino, just a few kilometres from Salerno. The five hectares of vineyards lie at an altitude of 100 metres in the shadow of a medieval castle, surrounded by oak, chestnut and citrus groves. The medium-textured soil with a high proportion of skeleton, the south-west exposure and the protection of the Picentini mountains create a microclimate in which Mediterranean mildness meets cool nights.
The cuvée combines 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot – a combination of international elegance and southern Italian character. After being harvest by hand, 15% of the must is extracted by saignée. This is followed by 20 days of maceration in stainless steel, then twelve months of ageing in new barriques from Nevers, Allier and Tronçais and at least six months of bottle ageing. Only around 20,000 bottles are produced each year – a rare commodity.
Deep ruby red in colour with a purple core. The nose reveals dark plums, cassis, fresh figs, camphor and fine roasted notes. Full-bodied yet precise on the palate: velvety tannins, flavours of salted chocolate, lively acidity and a final of remarkable length and persistence. A modern wine with a classic profile that combines power and finesse in rare balance – ready for decades in the cellar or for the big moment today. SUPERIORE.DE
"A modern wine with a classic profile and four-square structure. Plums. cassis, fresh figs, camphor and toast on the nose. Full-bodied, it displays velvety tannins, salted chocolate flavors, lifted acidity and a sticky finish." James Suckling
"The nose mixes blackberries, black cherries and pomegranates with black licorice and citrus. On the palate, the depth of macerated berries provides the foundation for citrus that gets punched up by heat on the finish, structured by chalky, chewy tannins. A warm embrace of a wine." Wine Enthusiast
