Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2022 (BIO)
Italy connoisseur and wine critic Ian D'Agata writes about the grape variety in his book "Native Wine Grapes of Italy": "Verdicchio is arguably Italy's greatest native white grape variety. This statement may surprise those who have only tasted neutral or watery Verdicchio wines, sometimes even bottled in incredible, amphora-shaped bottles."
Light straw green. Clean and fresh on the nose, lively and buoyant on the palate with an almost laser-like precision in the aromas of citrus, herbs, almonds, shellfish and crushed rock. Its sweet and sour note makes the wine even more attractive and gives it a touch of "drink me now". Everything here is in perfect balance and of natural tension. Already the basic wine of Bisci with 7 months of ageing on the fine lees impressively shows the great class of the winery. SUPERIORE.DE

Bright straw yellow with a sparkling centre. Vecchie Vigne from a vineyard over 40 years old has a seductive aroma of almond petals, white flowers, meadow herbs, lemon and white peach, with a green apple aftertaste. Lively minerality and a slight hint of aniseed on the palate. The expressive flavour is of fabulous elegance and length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling straw yellow with a green tinge. Elegantly restrained on the nose, white flowers, camomile and meadow herbs appear with air, followed by white peach. Extremely juicy on the palate, full of energy, delicately enveloping, vibrant acidity, lingering, animating final." Falstaff
"The complex aromas of ripe white fruit and citrus, together with a delicate honey note, are reflected on the full, medium-bodied palate, which is round, silky and full of slightly honeyed fruit flavours. Everything in view. Balanced. Interesting and unexpected Marsiglia aftertaste. This is a superfine Verdicchio." James Suckling
"This old-vine Verdicchio shines out of the glass with an intense saltiness, fresh herbs, preserved lemon and white flowers. Mouth-smacking good, with dehydrated lemon, tangerine and almond flavors all playing supporting roles to the star of this wine, the intense seashell minerality." Wine Enthusiast

“Misco” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2021
Misco, the estate's second top white product and a Verdicchio matured in stainless steel, exudes an elegant bouquet of floral and aniseed notes. On the palate, it is a magnificent interplay of juice and vigour, spicy tension, fresh citrus notes and aromatic firmness. It is one of the best in its denomination every year. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light golden light yellow; stale-fruity notes, mushroom; full-bodied, almost fruity, delicately bitter, lemony, also fresh mushrooms in the mouth, fresh, juicy." Merum
"Bright, sparkling straw yellow colour. Nobly restrained nose, mineral notes, reminiscent of wet stone, with some lemon and sage behind it. Lots of citrus fruit on the palate, fresh, crystalline clarity, salty, racy acidity, lingering, mouthwatering final." Falstaff
"This four-hectare cru facing the river spends 12 months on the lees without batonnage in stainless steel tanks, giving intense and fresh apple and lemon characters accompanied by floral scents and subtle spice. Soft and smooth, there's a touch of leesy creaminess underlining orange peel and juicy pineapple, peach and baked apple flavours. White pepper notes emerge on the long finish." Decanter
"The 2021 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Misco offers a minimalist reading of the grape with very fresh and concentrated flavours of white flowers, cut grass, freshly squeezed grapefruit and a hint of white pepper. The finish has a tangy, electric quality." Wine Advocate
"Always breathtaking, the 100% Verdicchio from Misco from a slightly late harvest. A multifaceted and fascinating nose, medicinal herbs, sage in the lead, tabacchiera peach, lily of the valley, with beautiful tension. Broad and crisp on the palate, horizontal, with excellent persistence." Luca Gardini

“Plenio” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva DOC 2021
Bright yellow-green colour. Ripe peaches, apricots, minerals, smoke, nougat and honey closely interwoven in the aroma. Beautifully proportioned, intense, creamy, with a beautiful lightness and elegance on the palate, in which the barrel wood is masterfully integrated. SUPERIORE.DE
"I like the fresh herbs that come to the nose, such as basil and lemon balm. You can't miss the ripe citrus fruit and apples. It all comes together beautifully on the palate. It is medium-bodied and concentrated, but at the same time silky and relaxed. You can enjoy it here and now, but if you're feeling adventurous, it's tantalising to see what happens when it matures for another year or two in the bottle." James Suckling
"The wine opens with aromas of pineapple, roasted citrus, pressed yellow flowers and fennel. The rounded palate is mouthfilling with notes of lemon, lemon oil, bitter almond and crushed stone minerality." Wine Enthusiast

“Serra Fiorese” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva DOC 2021
Garofoli's Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva Serra Fiorese is initially rather restrained in the glass with delicate nuances of yellow flowers, peach skin and a hint of spices. It is then powerful on the palate with rich peach and nectarine notes accompanied by zesty citrus fruit. It leaves an aftertaste of tension and whets the appetite for more with its salty minerality and a hint of baked apple that lingers for a long time. The Serra Fiorese, vinified in small batches, is a barrel-matured and fermented Verdicchio that needs to be given a certain amount of time to experience its undisputed greatness, and then it is great! “Mirum” Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG 2020
Verdicchio Riserva in a rich, sensual style with plenty of dynamism in the glass. Ripe peaches, flowers, sweet herbs, orange peel and minerals in a complex yet typical varietal bouquet. First-class impressions on the palate and already easy to drink today, but with good potential for the coming years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Here is a pretty white wine that delivers on both fronts: aromatic complexity and mouthfeel. The Monacesca 2020 Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva Mirum sees fruit from a three-hectare site on heavier clay soils. This unoaked Riserva starts off with a decisively mineral-driven bouquet with dustings of crushed stone and powdered terracotta. A swell of primary fruit appears on second nose with candied lemon, Darjeeling tea and waxy fruit." Wine Advocate

“Vigneto Fogliano” Verdicchio di Matelica DOC 2021 (BIO)
The quality of Italian white wines has risen sharply in the last 20 years, and this also applies to Verdicchio. There are still quite a few bad old-fashioned wines, but the good ones can be a revelation. The region around Matelica in particular has made Verdicchio famous, as the best representatives of its type come from here - and mostly from the higher vineyards: complex, mineral, fresh and long-lasting.
Vigneto Fogliano is produced only in the best years from a careful selection of Verdicchio grapes from the best vineyard of the Biscis. On the nose, it presents green fruit with beautiful notes of honeydew melon and summer jasmine. Its deep, multi-layered flavours of apples, pears, fresh citrus fruits and a hint of menthol caress the palate creamily, before a salty minerality and fresh acidity take over and help the wine achieve a perfection that is second to none. Fogliano spends 18 months on the lees in a cement tank before being bottled in numbered bottles. In a nutshell, it is a great white wine! SUPERIORE.DE

“Misco” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva DOC 2018
Tavignano's complex top product Misco Riserva represents the synthesis of the winery's Verdicchio expertise and is their most refined interpretation of the terroir. Starting with the grapes from the Cru Misco vineyard, those grapes are selected that can best develop first in steel and then in the bottle. This ageing highlights the richness of the grape variety, its spicy and mineral notes and provides the ideal conditions for a long ageing, maintaining its aromatic vivacity at all times. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant straw yellow. Nose of sea salt, raspberries, pineapple, juicy pear and candied lemon zest and a hint of spice. Opens up on the palate with great play, savoury and clear, seems very noble, lingers long and polished on the final." Falstaff
"Ripe and seductive with some phenols and a hint of honey on the nose and palate. Rich and round with good acidity and freshness. Impressive length and intensity." Decanter
"The 2018 Verdicchio dei Castello di Jesi Riserva Misco holds its power in reserve, displaying a delicate but layered and sweet-smelling bouquet that blends white smoke with pretty flowers, chamomile, cardamom and melon. Its weighty, almost oily texture is balanced by a core of bright acidity, where lemon zest combines with green apple and a hint of ginger to create a satisfying and spicy experience. For all the depth and character the Riserva shows today, the best is yet to come. The finish is long and tense, but still leaves you wanting more, along with that textbook almond bitterness that goes on and on. Brava." Vinous

South of Rimini and the small state of San Marino, not far from the port city of Ancona, one of Italy's most exciting and versatile white grape varieties can be found: Verdicchio (pronounced: werdik-jo) from the Marche. Some might be familiar with this wine because of the characteristic green amphora bottle that exploded around the world from the 1960s onwards - and, as is unfortunately so often the case, at the expense of overall quality. The once tasteless industrial wine is fortunately history.
More sustainable cultivation methods and the selection of the right sites are just some of the reasons that freed Verdicchio from its image crisis and helped it achieve a remarkable leap in quality. Because of it, the wine production of the Marche region is no longer inferior to its more famous neighbours, such as Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Lazio and Abruzzo.
The remarkable green grape colour that Verdicchio takes on even when fully ripe gives the ancient variety its name. It is traded as a descendant of the Italian grape variety family Greco-Trebbiano, especially since genetic analyses proved a remarkable similarity between Verdicchio and the Venetian grape variety Trebbiano di Soave. It is very likely that the variety was introduced to the Marche region by settlers from the Veneto towards the end of the 15th century.
Verdicchio is also popular in other Italian regions, although there is no doubt that the one from the central Italian region is the best. The largest growing zone is the 2,700-hectare DOC Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, located in the northern centre of the Marche. The high clay content and skeletal deposits in the soil here produce semi-aromatic grapes that are ideally suited to the production of still, sparkling and sweet wines.
Further west, the influence of the Apennine mountains comes to the fore in the racy wines of the small Verdicchio di Matelica DOC appellation, which covers only 300 hectares. It is located further inland in the region and is characterised by higher vineyard sites and more mineral-rich soils. It is important to understand at this point that the wines from the two aforementioned DOCs within the Marche differ significantly from each other, although they must both be made from at least 85% Verdicchio grapes. A wine from the DOC Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi tends to have delicate fruity, floral notes and a ripe character with less acidity due to its proximity to the sea. However, if the taste is to go in the direction of structured, firm, mineral-intensive wines with higher acidity, then the Verdicchio from Matelica is certainly the more exciting choice. The typical almond note is the only thing that almost all producers can agree on. In young wines, the almond note usually tastes a little more bitter, while it becomes increasingly sweeter with age. Because of its pronounced herbal aromas, salty minerality and unique fruity notes, Verdicchio should therefore not only be drunk young. It is one of the few white wines in Italy that is designated as a Riserva wine after at least 18 months of ageing with the DOCG classification of the aforementioned appellations - so it is no wonder that it is also loved by those who otherwise prefer red wines.
We wonder when more wine drinkers will finally discover Verdicchio? Finding it on a wine list is not a matter of course. All the better that we have some great Verdicchio wines in our warehouse. SUPERIORE.DE
