Pliocene clays retain moisture. In a dry, hot year like 2020, this is not merely an agricultural detail, but a survival strategy. The clay soils of Poggio Landi, situated 300 to 500 metres above Torrenieri, provided a natural buffer against the summer drought that put large parts of Montalcino under strain that year. The organically farmed vines, with their deeper, more active root systems, played their part. The result is a Brunello full of concentration and character. Herbal and spicy notes on the nose – wild herbs, fennel and oregano – followed by sweet cherry and tamarind. Two weeks of spontaneous fermentation, 38 months in large French oak barrels, and 6 months in bottle.
A deep ruby red. The bouquet is complex and expressive, characterised by spicy depth and dark fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied and supported by lively acidity; the tannins are firm and well-structured, whilst the final is long and enlivened by a citrus-fresh bitterness. More concentrated than the previous vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
"An elegant bouquet, with ripe fruit notes: cherry, preserved cherries, orange peel, citrus fruits and Mediterranean spices; thoroughly complex and nuanced. On the palate, it is juicy, engaging yet elegant, with ethereal, balsamic notes such as liquorice and aniseed, as well as dried flowers. A juicy, slender, tightly woven palate with very lovely (rather red) fruit character and firm, porous tannins." Weinwisser
"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino, made from certified organic grapes, has a spicy character with notes of toasted spices and tobacco. It reminds me of Christmas spices and nutmeg. The wine has already begun to develop further and is showing the first signs of tertiary aromas, which may become even more pronounced as a result of its ageing in oak. One can sense the phenolic ripeness with grainy, open-structured tannins." Wine Advocate
"On the nose, a herbaceous and spicy bouquet initially unfolds, with notes of chilli, wild oregano and wild fennel, which then give way to sweet and zesty aromas of tamarind and tart cherries. Sweet cherries and strawberry jam dominate on the palate, but the finish provides balance with bitter citrus peel and a delightful acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"A lovely blend of vibrant red cherries and bergamot leaves lends this wine a very elegant character, paired with subtle smoky notes and liquorice. Almost minty freshness. A full-bodied, dense palate with velvety tannins, a spicy character and refreshing, well-integrated acidity. Great fruit concentration and a good finish." James Suckling
