2020 was the year in which the silence of the vineyards became a calculation. While the world stood still, Montalcino's winegrowers transformed the enforced slowness into precision: vineyard by vineyard, vine by vine, with an attention that other years would not have allowed. At Poggio di Sotto, this benefited a winery that is never in a hurry anyway. The summer of 2020 was hot – no question about it. But Monte Amiata, always vigilant behind the vineyards, moderated with its cool nights. Rain at the end of September, then a long, leisurely autumn with thirty days of marked day-night difference. Poggio di Sotto harvested late, only at the end of September – and took its time. In hot years, the estate characteristically chooses the deeper plots for its Riserva: cooler clay and Galestro, the natural brake against over-ripening. The result is a 2020 that carries the warmth of the vintage without being dominated by it.
Cellar master Leonardo Berti calls it more direct and expressive than the 2019 – and does not mean this as a devaluation, but as a description of its character. In the glass: bright ruby red. Wild strawberry, orange zest, fleur de lavande, a mineral salt tone. Silky, fresh on the palate, with precise fruit and tannins that carry without pressing. Pure seduction! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, elegant ruby red colour. Discreet candle wax, Amarena cherries and precious wood on the nose, with slightly citrusy notes, rather restrained overall. Medium-bodied and light-footed on the palate, very delicate and dancing, shows itself with beautiful juiciness and clear cranberry fruit, radiant, clear, wonderfully drinkable!" Falstaff
"Rose petals and sour cherries combine with citrus shavings, cloves and rosemary as the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2020 slowly blossoms in the glass. It is a model of grace and elegance, with cool acidity and bright wild berries riding a silky textural wave as rosy florals swirl inside the wine. It leaves a framework of sweet tannins balanced by a pleasantly bitter note, while hints of liquorice mingle with blackberries and spices. Don't be fooled by the gentle character of the 2020; this wine is made for the cellar. If you open it today, give it plenty of oxygen to free it from its youthful reductive state." Vinous
"Despite its structure, this wine is very elegant. On the nose, it shows lively aromas of balsamic, marzipan, candied fruit, red cherries, orange peel, liquorice and charcoal. Full-bodied, supple, crisp and exciting, with fine tannins and beautiful length." James Suckling
"Mint and menthol accents highlight the core of cherry, plum, dill and celery seed flavors. Iron and tobacco notes chime in as this red plays out on the gripping finish. Lean and intense, with buried fruit that should reveal itself over time." Wine Spectator
"The aromas of Poggio di Sotto's 2020 Riserva reminded me of the wonderfully fragrant Annata bottling, which here amplifies the heady scents of Poggio di Sotto with an exotic tangle of cardamom, coriander, mint and tangerine. The palate is equally fragrant as wet stone and lavender mingle with wild strawberries and raspberries. This wine is rich and brooding in flavour, precise and confident in structure, yet agile and light on its feet. Tightly woven, chalky tannins give it grip, while the finish is mineral and minty." Decanter
"The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2020 shows a distinctly different vintage profile, placing less emphasis on mineral brilliance and more on darker tones of wild plums and blackcurrants. Subtle spices and grilled herbs develop at the back of the palate, followed by a finish characterised by bitter almond and a gentle hint of sweetness. I remember crushing coriander seeds in a marble mortar and pestle. 24 hours later, I tasted the bottle again and it's amazing how much more expressive it became." Wine Advocate
