In 1987, Castello Romitorio was not yet a winery. Just a castle, an artist and an idea. Sandro Chia bought grapes from his friend and cellar master Franco Martini and had the first wine vinified – even before a single vine of his own had ripened. That was the Romitorio: not a reaction, but an attitude. Today it grows at Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte in Scansano, 25 kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, at an altitude of 170 metres. The soils are of Pliocene origin – galestro, clay, Alberese, interspersed with fossils and shell remains, remnants of a primeval seabed. Petit Verdot and Syrah give the wine its profile: fermentation in steel, ageing in cement and oak.
Deep ruby red with garnet nuances. Plum, marasca, violets on the nose, followed by vanilla, cocoa and a hint of tobacco. Full and round on the palate, with tannins that carry and open up with age, and a long, warm final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The grapes for the 2022 Romitorio come from the Scansano area, but are processed in the Montalcino winery, resulting in a creative experiment between Bordeaux and Rhône in Tuscany. The wine shows a vinous richness with layers of black fruit and a smoky nuance reminiscent of the wild hills of Maremma, while notes of white pepper, garrigue and juniper berries give the wine a distinct aromatic profile." Wine Advocate
"The 2022 Toscana Rosso is peppery and floral, with an airy bouquet of rose petals, dusty earth and blackberry nuances. This is cool-toned and sleek, with racy black and blue fruits alongside sweet lavender. The long and wonderfully fresh finish leaves sour citrus, clove and a pleasantly bitter tinge." Vinous
"Exciting and polished, with flavours of ripe cherries, red plums, dried flowers, red liquorice and a hint of iodine. The medium to full-bodied palate is filled with similar fruit and a beautifully velvety finish." James Suckling
"Aromas and flavours of blackberries, boysenberries, bacon and violets accentuate this supple red wine. Beautifully integrated, with polished tannins and lively acidity driving the fruity aftertaste." Wine Spectator
