Giovanni Neri died in 1986, fifteen years after buying Podere Casanova. He had lived the dream – but not long enough to see what became of it. His son Giacomo and his grandsons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo continue to live his dream. And on the fiftieth anniversary of the first vineyard, they dedicated a wine to the founder that bears his name – and his attitude: the belief that Montalcino can do more than the world thought at the time. The vineyard is old and untamed, as the estate itself puts it – vines over fifty years old that have never stopped taking deep roots.
What Giacomo and his sons make from this vineyard is the most elaborate vinification of the entire estate: 20% of the grapes are fermented as whole bunches, stalks included – a decision that adds a layer of herbal flavour, structure and freshness to the wine that no press alone can produce. 29 days of maceration in open, conical fermentation vats – longer than any other Casanova di Neri Brunello. No added yeast, no intervention.
2021 was a year that suited this approach: even ripeness, pronounced structure, almost perfect tannin maturity. The result is an elegance that doesn't need to force anything. Deep, intense ruby red colour. Dark berries, blood orange, mint, a delicate floral hint on the nose – complex and of great stillness. Intense and balanced on the palate, with tannins of remarkable ripeness, fully integrated acidity and a vibrant, chiselled final. A Brunello that bears the name of its founder – and shows what half a century means. SUPERIORE.DE
"A rich, sparkling ruby colour, very good concentration. Present and very compact nose, extremely inviting, shows notes of ripe, dark cherry, then tar and plum, juicy blood orange in the background. Radiates on the palate and fills it completely, very precise, lots of present fruit, then opens up with fine-meshed tannins in many layers, echoes for an extremely long time, an experience!" Falstaff
"Named after his grandfather, winemaker Giovanni Neri uses 20% whole bunches to enhance the freshness and fruit character. It captures the wild Mediterranean essence of myrtle, pine and juniper along with mint tea. It is packed with dark wild berries and has an equally concentrated, mouth-watering acidity. The compact tannins are still a little chewy at the moment, but their polish is evident. This wine makes a good impression, but should be even more enjoyable when all its complex components come together." Decanter
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri offers a bright, powerful profile with notes of sweet almonds, cassis and blue flowers. The tannins are well polymerised, even if a hint of stiffness remains and needs time to soften. The finish is medium-long and polished. This wine comes from the most recent parcel (in the Sesti area) to be added to the estate's portfolio and is intended as a more nuanced and ageworthy interpretation of Sangiovese." Wine Advocate
"The Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri 2021 is a real spice box on the nose, with crushed roses, spiced orange peel, incense, raspberries, herbal tea leaves and a hint of mint. Livelier and more energetic than expected, it shows grace and youthful composure with mineral-tinged wild berries. The lively sour cherry lingers incredibly long on the finish, while fine-grained tannins frame the experience and a hint of residual acidity leaves the mouth craving more." Vinous
"Blackberry, cassis and black cherry flavours are the main themes of this muscular red wine, which is framed by wild rosemary, juniper and Mediterranean scrub. Thick tannins dominate the finish, but the wine remains long, ripe and balanced. The intense fruit flavours are the lasting impression." Wine Spectator
"A muscular Brunello from a single vineyard. Intense aromas of dark cherries, mint, lilac and sandalwood. Full-bodied with a tight and compact palate, chewy tannins and a fresh and tense finish. It needs time to develop and unify. Best after 2028." James Suckling
