Petit Verdot is a grape variety that the world is wary of. In Bordeaux, it is used to add flavour – a few per cent, hardly more. As a stand-alone, pure variety, taking centre stage: hardly anyone dares to do that. Tua Rita took the plunge for the first time in 2017. 60% Petit Verdot from young vineyards on heavily clay-rich soils of the Colline Metallifere, 40% Merlot from 35-year-old vines. "Esuberante e maturo", as the winery itself puts it. A duet of exuberance and maturity. The Petit Verdot comes from vineyards planted in 2011 – young, but in a location that needs no introduction: iron-rich clay, mineral depth, sea breezes from the Piombino Channel. The Merlot comes from the old plots that have defined the estate's reputation for decades. Hand-harvested, fermented in wooden tanks, then aged for 18 months in French and American oak barriques – the wood acting as a dialogue, not a monologue.
Deep ruby red. On the nose, blackberry, cassis, white pepper, tobacco, smoke and black olive – complex and with an intensity one would not expect from this grape variety. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with silky tannins, balsamic notes and a long, slightly salty and mineral finish. Petit Verdot at the peak of its potential – and a hint of what Suvereto is still capable of. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Lodano Rosso 2023 represents a significant development for this wine, which is made from 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Merlot and comes from older vines, including some of the first international grape varieties to be planted in the Suvereto area. The wine displays remarkable freshness and a peppery note. We have a more transparent and vibrant expression that brings the precision, freshness and clarity of the grape variety to the fore." Wine Advocate
"A crisp and attractive red with aromas and flavours of blackberry and blueberry, firm yet polished tannins, a fine texture and a long, creamy finish. Vertical. Enduring." James Suckling
"On the nose, it is initially herbaceous, then nutty, then sweet, like a green mallow that hardens into a walnut, which is then sugared and caramelised. The texture is what stands out on the palate, like crepe de chine – crinkled and substantial, yet supple and silky. All of Tua Rita's wines are unique, but the Lodano stands out even within this rare group." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2023 Lodano is powerful, dense and explosive right out of the gate. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, sage, menthol, licorice and crème de cassis stain the palate. The 2023 is pretty soft for a wine that is 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Merlot. Lifted floral and savory overtones extend the wild, eccentric finish. This is classic Tua Rita all the way." Vinous
