Elisabetta Geppetti is more than just a winemaker – she is the "Signora del Morellino", that dynamic woman who, at the age of just 20, took the reins of the family-owned winery and helped the Maremma gain international renown. When she pressed the first Morellino in 1985, she laid the foundations for a success story that continues to this day. This wine is Le Pupille's calling card, both in terms of quantity and quality – a consistent, authentic expression of the terroir between Pereta and Magliano in Toscana.

Their Morellino blends Sangiovese (90 per cent) with Alicante and the indigenous Ciliegiolo (5% each) from south-west-facing vineyards at altitudes of between 50 and 250 metres. The vines, some of which are over 40 years old, are rooted in stony, clay- and iron-rich soils, cooled by sea breezes and invigorated by marked day-night temperature variations. Following the harvest at the end of September, the must ferments on the skins for 15 days and matures for eight months, mainly in stainless steel tanks with a small proportion in used barriques.

A brilliant ruby red with violet highlights, intense aromas of Maraska cherries, blueberries and red berries, underpinned by hints of violets, cinnamon and balsamic notes. Silky and fresh on the palate, crisp and unadorned with fine-grained tannins – a lively Sangiovese with Mediterranean spice and that energetic coastal character that makes the Maremma so distinctive.
