A wine born from a love story between two worlds: When Thomas Bär acquired the La Valletta estate in Panzano in 2011, he not only completed his family's legacy, but also created the basis for a unique cuvée that combines two exceptional terroirs in perfect harmony. Valletta is the liquid manifesto of this visionary decision: half Sangiovese from the galestro-rich terraces of Castellina and half Merlot from the stone-rich soils of Conca d'Oro. On the one hand, the centuries-old, UNESCO-protected dry stone walls of Gagliole, where the vines find an ecological balance between olive trees and roses. On the other, the sun-drenched heights of La Valletta at the upper edge of the Golden Valley, where the shell-shaped amphitheatre develops its famous microclimate.
The 2019 vintage shows all the finesse of the "Vinificazione Integrale" – the holistic method that makes Gagliole special: the Sangiovese grapes ferment in large oak barrels, while the Merlot develops its full potential in the legendary "Cult" barriques of the Baron winery. The barrels are turned several times a day to ensure permanent contact between the juice, skins, seeds and wood – a constant, low temperature over 45 to 60 days creates a depth that only this method can achieve.
The magic of this dual origin is revealed in the glass: intense ruby red with violet reflections, a complex bouquet of ripe black fruit, liquorice, spices and tobacco leaves. Silky and enveloping on the palate, with a fine density and remarkable persistence that ends in notes of black fruit, coffee and dark chocolate. This is more than just a wine – it is the liquid poetry of a Swiss family that lost its heart to Tuscany and created something unique from it: a bridge between precision and passion, between tradition and innovation.
