The Biserno project began in 2001 with a hunch: Piero and Lodovico Antinori, their nephew Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi and Umberto Mannoni recognised the potential of the hills north of Bolgheri. For over twenty years, they worked meticulously on a plot-by-plot basis, defining three distinct estates – biserno, Campo di Sasso and Collemezzano – and gained an ever-deeper understanding of the region. Today, Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi runs the estate on his own. Colle Mezzano is his most personal wine.

Tenuta di Collemezzano is situated ten kilometres north of Bibbona, at an altitude of 80 to 120 metres, facing south-west with sea views – the most recent acquisition, added in 2019. The vines were planted in the 1990s: Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on clay-sandy soil with a high proportion of skeletal material consisting of small alluvial pebbles and excellent drainage. A different terroir to Biserno, and a different one to Campo di Sasso – with its own mineral rigour and characteristic proximity to the sea. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, 3 to 4 weeks of maceration, followed by 12 to 16 months in French oak barriques, some of which are new. At least a further 12 months in the bottle.

Deep ruby red with violet highlights. On the nose, red fruits, graphite, sweet spices, balsamic and mineral notes – complex and multi-layered. On the palate, it is structured and enveloping, with velvety tannins, a long finish and a characteristic salty note on the aftertaste. Hidden power and elegance in perfect balance.
